On Friday, July 12, 1991, Pearl Jam played JC Dobbs in Philadelphia. The band played eleven songs, and the two chronologies that record the show agree on every one of them and on the order. It was the second show of the summer run the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology calls the band's first trek away from the West Coast, two nights after Boston.

The show

At JC Dobbs

Two nights earlier the band had gone on first on a bill of six bands in Boston; that night is told in Opening the Bill in Boston. In Philadelphia there were two opening acts, and on who they were the two chronologies disagree: the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology lists Mama Volume and Carnival of Shame, and Five Horizons lists Carnival of Souls and Mellow Vibe. In Boston the two had listed the same five bands; here they share no name.

Both chronologies carry the same note on the night: Eddie Vedder thanked the opening bands and made a reference to Mother Love Bone having played there in the past. Mother Love Bone was the band Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament had been in before this one.

The Performance

The set was eleven songs: "Wash," "Once," "Even Flow," "State of Love and Trust," "Alive," "Oceans," "Jeremy," "Why Go," "Porch," "Alone," and "Breath." Both entries give the same eleven in the same order.

It was the longest set either chronology had listed for the band: one more song than the ten at the Off Ramp in May, and three more than in Boston two nights earlier. Every song from the Boston list is in it, with "Oceans," "Jeremy," and "Breath" added. "Oceans" had not been in any of the July sets before this; the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology first records it in Vancouver in January, and it had been in the set at the Off Ramp in May. The set closed with "Alone" and "Breath."

The Next Step

The next night the band was in New York for the first time, at the Marquee, before a crowd the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology describes as heavy with music-industry people in town for the New Music Seminar; that night is told in The Industry Handshake.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

What the two entries carry is eleven songs in one order, the same note on what Vedder said between songs, and two different pairs of opening acts. Neither names a recording.

What the list itself preserves is the longest set so far: eleven songs, where the band had played eight at home on July 4 and eight in Boston.
