45 Minutes from Boston

· Rockypoint · Warwick

Between the run's two pairs of Roseland nights came a Wednesday at the Rocky Point Palladium in Warwick, Rhode Island, a room its ad put only 45 minutes from Boston. The ad had Pearl Jam third, under special guests, all ages, at $17.50; the one list printed for the night has six songs, with a few lines of a Smashing Pumpkins song before "Alive."

On Wednesday, November 13, 1991, Pearl Jam played the Rocky Point Palladium in Warwick, Rhode Island, supporting the Red Hot Chili Peppers, with the Smashing Pumpkins on the bill, by the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's listing. Five Horizons lists the Pumpkins alone. Neither chronology gives a figure; the first prints six songs and a few lines of a Pumpkins song before "Alive," and the second prints the bill and nothing else.

The show

At the Rocky Point Palladium

The night before, the band had played the second of the Roseland nights in New York; it is told in The Biggest Knicks Fan. The tour book for the run, as the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology reproduces it, has Wednesday the 13th in Warwick, at a room it prints as the Rocky Point Ballroom, between the two Roseland pairs. Rocky Point Park, by Wikipedia's account, was an amusement park on the Narragansett Bay shore of Warwick that occasionally hosted concerts in its Palladium Ballroom, the room behind the chronologies' Palladium and the tour book's Ballroom. The article's list of those concerts has the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam for 1991.

Both chronologies name the room the Rocky Point Palladium, and so does the ad the first reproduces, credited to a contributor. It is headed Wednesday, November 13th, and names the Red Hot Chili Peppers with special guests the Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam, doors at 6:30pm, the show at 7:30pm, and $17.50 tickets in advance at Strawberries or the night of the show. It carries a second listing, for the Pixies with Pere Ubu on the 26th, a road map headed Rocky Point Park, and the line Only 45 minutes from Boston! All shows all ages, it says, and the Palladium features a full bar with proper I.D.

The Performance

The set, by the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology, was six songs: "Wash," "Even Flow," "Alive," "Jeremy," "Why Go," and "Porch"; Five Horizons prints the bill and no set. Before "Alive," the first says, Eddie Vedder sang a few lines of "Window Paine," a Smashing Pumpkins song, which it prints in parentheses between "Even Flow" and "Alive."

The Next Step

The next entry in both is Thursday, November 14, an acoustic in-store at Tower Records in Yonkers, New York, and, in the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology alone, a second in-store that evening in Edison, New Jersey, on a day the tour book had planned for New Haven. Both are told in Seven Shows in Seven Days.

What the Record Preserves

The two entries share the date, the room, the city, and the Smashing Pumpkins on the bill; the first adds the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the six songs, the fragment, and the ad it reproduces; the second is a bare line, the bill under the heading and nothing more.

What the record preserves of Warwick is a Wednesday between the Roseland nights, an all-ages show at $17.50 in an amusement park's ballroom the ad put 45 minutes from Boston, six songs in the only list printed, and a few lines of a Pumpkins song before "Alive."
