Unannounced and Unadvertised

· Esplanade · Southend

Five Horizons opens its note on Pearl Jam's first European show with the words unannounced and unadvertised. The band's own production sheet for the day gives the room's capacity as 500; one chronology gives the attendance as 500 and the other as 300, and a capacity is not an attendance.

On Monday, February 3, 1992, Pearl Jam played the first show of their first European tour, in Southend, England. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads the entry The Esplanade; Five Horizons heads it The Esplanade Club and prints a running time of seventy minutes. Five Horizons opens its note by saying the show was "unannounced and unadvertised." The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology puts the attendance at 500 and marks the night sold out; Five Horizons puts it at 300. The chronology names Chickenhawk as the opening act; Five Horizons names none.

The show

The Band's Own Sheet

The band's production itinerary for the day survives, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology publishes it. It gives the date as Monday 3rd February and the city as London, and then the travel: a minibus from the hotel at noon and ninety miles to Southend. The venue line reads The Esplanade, Western Eslanade, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, with the street's name misspelled on the sheet. Get-in at four, soundcheck six to eight, doors at eight, the first act T.B.A. and the second blank, Pearl Jam at ten, and ninety miles back afterwards. The sheet also prints CAPACITY: 500. That is a statement about the room where the chronologies' figures are about the night: a room holding 500 is consistent with 500 present and equally consistent with 300.

Above this entry the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints a tour heading, First European Tour - 1992, and one sentence under it naming the countries the tour runs through and "the added concert in Switzerland." Five Horizons prints no tour heading and no preamble.

The Performance

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints twelve songs and an encore of two. Five Horizons prints eleven and an encore of three, and the item it puts first in its encore is not a song but a chant. Where the chronology lists "(Outshined)" and "Leash" as two entries Five Horizons joins them with a slash, and where the chronology writes Improv Five Horizons writes jam. Those are the two documents' conventions for setting a list down, and they are not a disagreement about what was played.

The two notes are substantially one text, so what follows is attributed to one document at a time. After "State Of Love And Trust" someone asked for "Hunger Strike," and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints the singer's reply: "Mr. Cornell, are you here? If Chris is here, we'll play it". A guitarist then started "Black" and was stopped, the same document says, and the band went into "Alive" instead; the singer found it "weird" that people in Europe knew the words. After "Jeremy" he asked for a little Soundgarden, a few "Outshined" riffs were played, and the jam after "Leash" was built on "Dirty Frank." Five Horizons alone puts a chant in its encore list, where the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology describes the same chant in its note, in the same place, before "Release," which both documents say was played as an encore for the first time. Each note closes with a remark he made before "Breath" about a television show the next day; one word of it is withheld here, at a named offset on each document's line, and the rest of both stands in the record.

The Next Step

Both documents put the next night in London and both carry a television performance and a concert; they are told together in Three Names for an Opening.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology hangs two documents under this date, the itinerary above and a preview, both PDFs behind thumbnails and neither titled in the markup. The first has been read and the second has not, and nothing is said here about what the second prints. Five Horizons hangs nothing under the night; what has not been opened is unopened and not absent. A recording of it is in this house, and the information file beside it is a transcription of Five Horizons naming Five Horizons, so it is not a second witness to that document.

Southend comes down to two attendance figures that do not agree, a capacity a third document prints for the room, and a note that exists twice in almost the same words.
