Rented Guitars, a Kick Drum and a Bongo

· Albani Music Club · Winterthur

The two chronologies share one note for the night: the stage was so tiny that the band rented acoustic guitars and went for an acoustic show. Only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology gives an attendance, marks the night sold out and prints a set list, which it calls incomplete.

On Wednesday, February 19, 1992, Pearl Jam played an acoustic show in Winterthur, at a room the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology calls the Albani Music Club and Five Horizons calls the Albani Bar of Music. The two chronologies print one note for the night, the same word for word but for the band's name, the singer's name and one apostrophe, and it is counted here as one source, not two. The note says the stage was extremely tiny, and that the band went for an acoustic show on rented acoustic guitars. Only the chronology gives an attendance, 250, and marks the night sold out; Five Horizons prints its heading and the note and nothing else.

The show

One Note, Two Names for the Room

The chronology's heading reads Albani Music Club - Winterthur, Switzerland (Acoustic), and Five Horizons' reads Albani Bar of Music: Winterthur, Switzerland (acoustic). The two names are printed here as each document gives them, and neither is taken for the other's error. The chronology's attendance line reads 250 (sold out); neither document gives a capacity for the room. The note they share says that even in this small space the singer climbed to the second floor, went over the heads of all the spectators and fell into the crowd on the main floor.

The Performance

The chronology gives a soundcheck of "Once" and a list it labels incomplete: "Oceans," "Even Flow," "State of Love and Trust," "Alive," "Jeremy," "Porch" and "Garden." Five Horizons prints no soundcheck and no set list, so those seven titles rest on one document, which says itself that they are not the whole set. In the shared note Dave set up a kick drum and a bongo, and the latter part of the set became a jam session.

The Next Step

Milan, the night before, is told in Two Hundred and Fifty, or Too Many. Both documents put the next show in Manchester two nights later, at a room the chronology calls The International 2 and Five Horizons calls International II, and it is told in Robbed, or Held Up by Thieves.

What the Record Preserves

Two objects hang under this date on the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's page, both photographs by their file names; neither is described here, and no person's name is taken from a markup title. The house holds no folder of recordings for the night, and Five Horizons links nothing under its entry. Winterthur comes down to one note the two documents share, and a set list and a sold-out mark that only the chronology prints.
