Robbed, or Held Up by Thieves

· International 2 · Manchester

Both documents say something happened to the band's tour bus, and they word it differently: the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology says it was robbed following the show, and Five Horizons that it was held up by thieves the evening of the show. Two tickets the chronology hangs under the night print the room's name as it does, and a tour poster Five Horizons hangs prints Five Horizons' form.

On Friday, February 21, 1992, Pearl Jam played in Manchester, at a room the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology calls The International 2 and Five Horizons calls International II, and neither document gives an attendance. Both documents say something happened to the band's tour bus, and they word it differently. The chronology says, "Pearl Jam's tour bus was robbed following this show," and Five Horizons says, "The evening of this show, PJ's tour bus was held up by thieves." Robbed against held up by thieves, and following the show against its evening, are printed here as each document has them, and neither is settled against the other. Only the chronology names an opening act and prints a set list.

The show

The Name on the Tickets

The chronology's heading reads The International 2 - Manchester, England, and Five Horizons' reads International II: Manchester, England. The chronology names Claytown Troupe as the opening act; Five Horizons names none. Two tickets hang under this date on the chronology's page, and both have been opened here: each prints the room's name as THE INTERNATIONAL 2, the chronology's form, with the address 210 Plymouth Grove, Manchester 13. The first is printed throughout, with the date Friday 21st February 1992, doors open at 7.30pm and a price of £4.50 advance, unreserved. The second has the artist, the date 21/2/92 and the price written in by hand, and a red stamp across it, partly illegible, that reads ONLY VALID FOR STAFF and names Sony Music Entertainment. Neither ticket prints an attendance, a capacity or the name of an opening act.

The Performance

The chronology's list for the night is "Wash," "Once," "Even Flow," "State of Love and Trust," "Alive," "Black," "Deep," "Jeremy," "Why Go" and "Porch," with no encore. The chronology prints this line word for word under four other dates that year, so it is not read here as a record of what was played that night. Five Horizons prints no list, and its only note for the night is the one about the bus.

The Next Step

Winterthur, two nights before, is told in Rented Guitars, a Kick Drum and a Bongo. Both documents put the next night at Riverside in Newcastle; it is told in Oceans, Started Twice.

What the Record Preserves

Seven objects hang under this date on the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's page: a stage list and two tickets, which have been opened here, and four photographs, which are not described here. Five Horizons hangs a tour poster under its entry, fetched and opened here, which prints the room as INTERNATIONAL II, Five Horizons' form, where both tickets print the chronology's. No person's name is taken from a markup title, and the house holds no folder of recordings for the night. The stage list carries ten titles in black, from WASH to PORCH, several in short forms. Across it, in a second ink, are signatures, a dedication and the word Manchester; its titles are not read here as a record of what was played. Manchester comes down to one incident worded two ways, two tickets that print the room's name as the chronology does, and a poster that prints it as Five Horizons does.
