Bad Mouth, or a Short Vocal Improv

· Rock City · Nottingham

Both documents put sixteen hundred people in Rock City and give one list in one order, and they identify two entries differently: near the end the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology names Bad Mouth where Five Horizons has a short vocal improv, and Five Horizons ties an earlier improvisation to a theme the chronology does not name. Both say the show was the day after a release of Ten, and they describe the release differently.

On Tuesday, February 25, 1992, Pearl Jam played Rock City in Nottingham, and both documents put the attendance at 1,600, the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology writing it with a space where Five Horizons uses a comma. The chronology names Claytown Troupe as the opening act, and Five Horizons names none and gives the show sixty-five minutes. The two lists agree entry for entry except in how two entries are identified: at the second improvisation Five Horizons names a theme and the chronology does not, and near the end the chronology prints "(Bad Mouth)" where Five Horizons prints "(short vocal improv)." That is a named song against an unnamed improvisation, and neither is taken here for the other. Both documents say the show was the day after a release of Ten, and they describe the release differently.

The show

Sixteen Hundred, Written Two Ways

The chronology's attendance line reads 1 600, and Five Horizons' reads 1,600: one figure, set down two ways, and not a disagreement. Neither document marks the night sold out or gives a capacity for the room. Five Horizons gives the show sixty-five minutes, in square brackets after its heading, and the chronology gives no running time.

The Performance

Both documents run "Wash," "Once," "(Outshined)," an improvisation, "Even Flow," "State of Love and Trust," "Alive," "Black," a second improvisation, "Deep," "Jeremy," "Why Go," "(Hunger Strike)," "Porch" and "Garden," then an entry they name differently, and "Leash." The chronology sets the last three entries apart as an encore and Five Horizons runs the whole list together, which is a way of setting a list down, not a second account. Where the chronology prints "(Bad Mouth)" between "Garden" and "Leash," Five Horizons prints "(short vocal improv)," joined to "Leash" with a slash. One names a song and the other names none, so they are two identifications of one place in the set, and neither is chosen here. Five Horizons calls the second improvisation instrumental and adds, "The improvisation leading to 'Deep' lasts for 50 seconds is limited to the 'Sympathy for the Devil' theme," a note the chronology does not have. The chronology says the show "is the day after the extended version of Ten was released in UK," and Five Horizons says it "is the day after Ten was released in England."

The Next Step

Glasgow, two nights before, is told in Booked for Three Hundred Pounds. Both documents put the next show in Birmingham the following night, at a room the chronology calls Edwards No. 8 and Five Horizons calls Edward's No. 8.

What the Record Preserves

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's page links no object of any kind under this date, which was measured in its markup. Five Horizons hangs a tour poster under its entry, fetched and opened here, which prints 25TH NOTTINGHAM ROCK CITY and gives Ten as released 24.2.92, the day before this show; it says nothing of an extended version. This house holds three folders of recordings dated to the night, listed but not opened, each of seventeen tracks from "Wash" to "Leash." At the entry before "Leash," where the two chronologies differ, the folders give "improv," "(Improvisation)" and "talk"; a track name is a label in a folder, not a document from the night, and none of the three is offered as evidence for either reading. Nottingham comes down to one figure written two ways, one list the two documents share but for two entries they identify differently, and a release of Ten each describes in its own words.
