A Review From Vera

· Vera · Groningen

Both chronologies put 450 in Vera and neither marks the night sold out, while a Dutch review the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology hangs gives its audience as uitverkocht, sold out. The two share one note, in which the singer sings a little of "Say Hello 2 Heaven" and asks about abortion, and the chronology alone adds that he played guitar on a Pearl Jam stage for the first time.

On Sunday, March 1, 1992, Pearl Jam played Vera in Groningen, which the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology places in the Netherlands and Five Horizons in Holland. Both put the attendance at 450 and neither marks the night sold out, and both name Captain Nemo, the chronology as the opening act and Five Horizons as the support act. Five Horizons gives the show seventy-seven minutes. The two print one note for the night, nearly word for word, and it is counted here as one source; the chronology's copy has a phrase and a sentence more.

The show

Uitverkocht, in a Review

The chronology hangs a review of the night in Dutch, opened here both as an image and as a PDF, which hold the same clipping, headed Pearl Jam is een half optreden meeslepend. Its details box reads "Gehoord: 1 maart in Vera, Groningen" and "Publiek: uitverkocht," which is to say heard on 1 March at Vera, Groningen, and audience sold out. The review prints no attendance figure, and its sold-out mark is the only one among the night's documents read here. It names "Oceans" as the quiet opening, the first title in both lists, and says that, with no balcony, the singer made a climb along the ceiling. It says a mediocre sound mix made the singer unintelligible, and that the band's fire slowly went out, finally in an endless jam session in the encore.

The Performance

Both documents run "Oceans," "Even Flow," "Why Go," "Jeremy," "Deep," "Alive," "Black," "State of Love and Trust," "Once" and "Porch," with an encore that begins with "Leash" and ends with "I've Got a Feeling." The chronology prints its line for the main set word for word under three other dates that year, so that line is not read here as a record of what was played that night. In the encore the chronology lists "(Say Hello 2 Heaven)" and an improvisation, and Five Horizons joins an improvisation to what it calls an "I've Got A Feeling jam," naming "Say Hello 2 Heaven" only in its note. In the note the two share, the singer sings a bit of "Say Hello 2 Heaven" a cappella after "Leash," a song the chronology's copy calls Temple of the Dog's, and then asks, "if you need an abortion, can you get one? Who pays for it?" A rambling improvisation follows, leading into "I've Got a Feeling" and more talk with the audience. The chronology's copy alone adds that at the end of the encore the singer "plays guitar on a Pearl Jam stage for the first time."

The Next Step

London, on February 28, is told in Eight Hundred and Fifty, or Six Hundred. Both documents put the next show at the Paard the following night, in a city the chronology calls The Hague and Five Horizons calls Den Haag; it is told in Saying No in Den Haag.

What the Record Preserves

Seventeen objects hang under this date on the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's page: an advertisement, a second poster, a ticket and the review in two forms, all opened here, and twelve photographs, which are not described here. The advertisement is the same scan as the show poster Five Horizons hangs under its entry, one object hung by both, and it prints Support Band: CAPTAIN NEMO and ZONDAG 1 MAART, with no year. The second poster is lettered CAPTAIN NEMO, PEARL JAM and VERA 1-3 21.30, and the ticket, cut at its left edge, prints Capt.Nemo, 1mrt., f.10,- and 21,30u. No person's name is taken from a markup title or from the credit line at the right edge of Five Horizons' copy of the poster. The house holds three folders of recordings dated to the night, listed but not opened, and a track name is a label in a folder, not a document from the night. Groningen comes down to one figure both chronologies print, a sold-out mark only the review carries, and a note the two share, with a first-time claim the chronology alone makes.
