Part of the Crowd

· Effenaar · Eindhoven

Both chronologies put five hundred people in the Effenaar and share one note for the night, in which the singer tells the room, "I'm part of the crowd and I care about you and if people are getting hurt, I'm gonna stop, OK?" An advertisement the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology hangs spells the support act the convenant, and a stage list it hangs carries ten titles in the order both lists print them.

On Thursday, March 5, 1992, Pearl Jam played the Effenaar in Eindhoven, which the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology places in the Netherlands and Five Horizons in Holland. Both documents put the attendance at 500; of the two chronologies, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology names an opening act, The Covenant, and Five Horizons gives the show seventy minutes. The two print one note for the night, nearly word for word, and it is counted here as one source.

The show

One Design in Two Colours

The advertisement the chronology hangs under the date, opened here, prints DO 5 MAART, ZAAL OPEN 21.00 and ENTREE FL. 12,50 above the band's name, an address in Dommelstraat beside the Effenaar's mark, and no year. It names the support act in lower case as the convenant, where the chronology's line reads The Covenant, and neither spelling is taken here for the other's error. The show poster Five Horizons hangs under its entry, fetched and opened here, is the same design in other colours, ending just below the Effenaar's mark, and it is counted here with the advertisement as one source; neither object prints an attendance.

The Performance

Both documents run "Release," "Even Flow," "Why Go," "Jeremy," "Leash," "Alive," "Black," "State of Love and Trust," "Once" and "Porch," then "Suggestion," "Deep" and "Garden." The chronology also prints "(Glue Man)" after "Why Go" and "(Outshined)" after "Deep," and Five Horizons has neither. The chronology sets the last four entries apart as an encore and Five Horizons prints no encore marker, which is a way of setting a list down, not a second account. The note the two share says the show began with the singer shouting for the music to stop so that the band could start. Before "Even Flow," it says, he told the crowd, "There's a girl here whose mom followed her into the show, just to make sure she is safe!" After "Even Flow" he talked of how the band had played in Holland for a few nights and how nice the people are. After "Leash" he said he would love to jump into the audience but was "having a hard time singing" and the crowd could help him, and the band went into "Alive." After "Alive" the note gives his words "I'm part of the crowd and I care about you and if people are getting hurt, I'm gonna stop, OK?" and his request that anyone taken off the stage be taken "gently". After "Black" there was a lot of talk about someone's lost and found spectacles, and how they could "get them back after the show". Before "Porch" he spoke to the crowd in Dutch. The note calls it a great show with a lot of interaction, despite the singer's sore throat.

The Next Step

Both documents put the show before at Tivoli in Utrecht on March 4. Both put the next show at Nighttown in Rotterdam the following night; it is told in A Sea of People.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

Four objects hang under this date on the chronology's page: the advertisement and a stage list, both opened here, and two photographs, which are not described here. The stage list carries ten titles in black marker, from RELEASE to PORCH, several in short forms, with no date and no encore, and beside them are scrawled marks in a lighter hand, some of them signatures by their look, and a short line that begins with the words thank you. Its ten titles are the first ten songs of both lists, in order, without the chronology's bracketed "(Glue Man)." The chronology hangs the list itself, so it is not offered here as independent of its line, and no person's name is taken from a markup title. The house holds three folders of recordings dated to the night, listed but not opened. Eindhoven comes down to a figure both documents print, an opening act the chronology names and its advertisement spells its own way, a note the two share, and a stage list in the order both lists print.
