From Luxor to the Live Music Hall

· Live Music Hall · Cologne

Only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology says the show was moved from Luxor to the bigger Live Music Hall because of the band's popularity; the two tickets it hangs are printed for Luxor, and a tour day sheet it hangs for the Live Music Hall. Of the two chronologies, only Five Horizons names "Saying No," after "Porch," and neither prints an attendance.

On Sunday, March 8, 1992, Pearl Jam played the Live Music Hall in Cologne, Germany, as both documents head the night. Neither prints an attendance; the chronology names Sun as the opening act, as the day sheet does, and Five Horizons names none and gives the show sixty minutes. The chronology's note is its own but for one sentence, on Stone's guitar tech, which Five Horizons prints too, so every other fact in the note rests on the chronology alone.

The show

Two Tickets for Luxor

The chronology's note says that, because of the band's popularity, the show was changed from Luxor to the bigger Live Music Hall, and Five Horizons says nothing of a move. Two tickets it hangs under the date, opened here, are printed for KÖLN • LUXOR, Luxemburger Str. 40, for 8 March 1992, with entry at 20.00 and the start at 21.00, and one carries a signature in black marker, which the chronology's markup titles a signed ticket. A tour day sheet it hangs, headed Hammer Promotion GmbH and also opened here, gives the venue as LIVE MUSIC HALL, LICHTSTR. 30, with LUXOR/HPM as the local promoter, SUN as support and doors at 20:00. So the tickets name the first room and the sheet the second, which fits the chronology's account of a move; neither object says why it was made. The sheet gives the room's capacity as 1.500, and a capacity is not an attendance.

The Performance

Both documents run "Wash," "Once," "Even Flow," "State of Love and Trust," "Alive," "Black," "Deep," "Jeremy," "Why Go" and "Porch," then "Garden," "(Outshined)" and "Leash." After "Jeremy" the chronology prints "Improv" where Five Horizons joins "Jam" to the song, and after "Porch" the chronology's encore opens with "Improv" where Five Horizons prints "Improv/Saying No/Improv," so of the two chronologies only Five Horizons names "Saying No." The chronology sets the last four entries apart as an encore and Five Horizons prints no encore marker, which is a way of setting a list down, not a second account. Both notes say Stone's guitar tech joined the band on guitar during "Even Flow," a sentence counted here once. The chronology alone adds that Jeff was very lively, bounding across the stage and jumping very high, and that during "Garden" the singer carried Mike on his shoulders, singing as he went.

The Next Step

Rotterdam, the show before, is told in A Sea of People. Both documents put the next show in Berlin the following night, at a room the chronology calls the Loft and Five Horizons The Loft; it is told in Many Sounds of Seattle.

What the Record Preserves

Four objects hang under this date on the chronology's page: the two tickets, and the day sheet as a PDF with a small image of the same page, all opened here. Under its own entry Five Horizons links only its video guide, which was not opened here. The house holds two folders of recordings dated to the night, listed but not opened, and both name a track Saying No, one of them between two improvisations as Five Horizons' list does; a track name is a label in a folder, not a document from the night. Cologne comes down to a move only the chronology reports, two tickets for the first room and a day sheet for the second, and a song that of the two chronologies only Five Horizons names.
