Many Sounds of Seattle
The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology puts 600 in the Loft and marks the night sold out, and Five Horizons puts 500; the two figures are printed here side by side and neither is settled. In the note the two share, the singer introduces what the note calls the band's first live "Rockin' in the Free World" and later tells the crowd "we are not the sound of Seattle".

On Monday, March 9, 1992, Pearl Jam played Berlin, at a room the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology calls the Loft and Five Horizons calls The Loft. The chronology's attendance line reads 600 (sold out), and Five Horizons' reads 500. They are two different figures, each printed here as its document gives it; neither is taken for a capacity, and neither is settled against the other. The chronology names Sun as the opening act, as the day sheet does, and Five Horizons names none; Five Horizons gives the show eighty minutes, and the two print one note for the night, nearly word for word, counted here as one source and quoted as the chronology prints it.
The show
A Day Sheet, a Ticket and a Text File
The tour day sheet the chronology hangs under the date, opened here, gives the venue as LOFT, AM NOLLENDORFPLATZ, with doors at 19:30, a curfew at 23:30 and SUN as support. It gives the room's capacity as 600; one chronology gives the attendance as 600 and the other as 500, and a capacity is not an attendance, so the sheet settles neither. The ticket it hangs, also opened here, is printed for BERLIN • LOFT, Am Nollendorfplatz, for 9 March 1992, with entry at 19.30 and the start at 20.30. A text file in the chronology's recording series, also opened here, heads itself The Loft, Berlin, Germany, as Five Horizons heads the night, gives its source and lineage, lists sixteen tracks and says it was compiled in January 2022. It is a later description of a recording, not a document from the night, and a track name in it is a label.
The Performance
Both documents run "Wash," "Once," "Even Flow," "State of Love and Trust," "Alive," "Black," "Deep," "Jeremy," "Why Go," "Rockin' in the Free World" and "Porch," with an encore of "Garden" and "Leash." Between "Rockin' in the Free World" and "Porch" the chronology prints "(Dirty Frank)" and Five Horizons "Jam/Dirty Frank ramblings." The note calls it the first live "Rockin' in the Free World" played by Pearl Jam, and says the singer started off by saying, "If we're gonna play it anywhere, we should play it here". Neither chronology lists the song under an earlier date in its 1992 entries, and the chronology's 1991 page never names it. Returning for the encore, it says, he told the crowd that "we are not the sound of Seattle" and that "There are many sounds of Seattle". During the "Garden" jam he told the crowd to pass him to the back and thanked them when he returned to the stage.
The Next Step
Cologne, the night before, is told in From Luxor to the Live Music Hall. Both documents put the next show at the Markthalle in Hamburg the following night; it is told in Konzert des Monats.
Recording & sound
What the Record Preserves
Twelve objects hang under this date on the chronology's page: the day sheet as a PDF with a small image of the same page, the ticket and the text file, all opened here, seven photographs, which are not described here, and a zip archive in the recording series, which was not fetched. No person's name is taken from a markup title, and Five Horizons hangs no object under its entry. The house holds four folders of recordings dated to the night, listed but not opened. Berlin comes down to two different attendances, the chronology's 600 with a sold-out mark and Five Horizons' 500, a day sheet whose capacity settles neither, and a note the two share.
