Only Five Horizons prints an attendance for the Markthalle, 400, and before "Once" it names an improvisation that the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints only as "Improv." A magazine page the chronology hangs marks the show KONZERT DES MONATS and lists it at the Markthalle at 21.00 Uhr.

On Tuesday, March 10, 1992, Pearl Jam played the Markthalle in Hamburg, Germany, as both documents head the night. Five Horizons alone prints an attendance, 400, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints none, so the figure is one document's and is not presented here as agreed. The chronology names Sun as the opening act, as the day sheet does, and Five Horizons names none and gives the show seventy minutes. The two share their note's lines on a slow intro and a changed lyric, counted here as one source, and only the chronology's note has a line about a birthday song.

The show

A Magazine, a Day Sheet and a Ticket

A magazine page the chronology hangs under the date and files as a preview, opened here, is headed MUSIK and PEARL JAM, marks the show KONZERT DES MONATS under the headline Die Schönheit des Subtilen, and carries a photograph captioned Großartige getragene Rockmusik: Pearl Jam. Its listing gives the Markthalle, 21.00 Uhr, VVK 19 DM and AK 22 DM beside the date 10.3., with no year, and the rest of the page is about the band and its records, with a draw for tickets, not an account of the night. The tour day sheet it hangs gives the venue as MARKTHALLE, KLOSTERWALL 9-21, admission as DM 19,00 / 22,00, doors at 20:00 and SUN as support, and the room's capacity as 1.000, which is not an attendance. The ticket, also opened here, is printed for HAMBURG • MARKTHALLE, Klosterwall 9-21, for 10 March 1992, with entry at 20.00 and the start at 21.00.

The Performance

Both documents run "Release," "Even Flow," "Why Go," "Jeremy," "Deep," "Alive," "Black," "State of Love and Trust," "Once," "Rockin' in the Free World" and "Porch," then "Suggestion," "Improv," "Garden," "Leash" and "I've Got a Feeling." Before "Once" there is an improvisation that Five Horizons names, where the chronology prints "Improv," so one document names what the other leaves unnamed, and neither reading is taken here for the other. The chronology also prints an "Improv" after "Deep," and in its encore "(Outshined)" after "Garden" and "(Atomic Dog)" joined to "I've Got a Feeling," and Five Horizons lists none of them. The chronology sets the entries from "(Suggestion)" on apart as an encore and Five Horizons prints no encore marker, which is a way of setting a list down, not a second account. In the lines the two share, "Rockin' in the Free World" was played with a different, slow intro, and the lyrics of "I've Got a Feeling" were changed. Only the chronology's note says that after "Leash" the band and the crowd sang "Happy Birthday" to Jeff.

The Next Step

Berlin, the night before, is told in Many Sounds of Seattle. Neither document has an entry for March 11, and both put the next show in Frankfurt on March 12, at a room the chronology spells Batschkapp and Five Horizons Batschkaap; it is told in A Special Bass.

What the Record Preserves

Five objects hang under this date on the chronology's page: the magazine page and the day sheet, each as a PDF with a small image of the same page, and the ticket, all opened here. Five Horizons hangs no object under its entry. The house holds four folders of recordings dated to the night, two of them one transfer copied twice, listed but not opened, and all four name that improvisation as Five Horizons' list does; a track name is a label in a folder, not a document from the night. Hamburg comes down to an attendance only Five Horizons prints, an improvisation that of the two chronologies only Five Horizons names, a birthday song only the chronology reports, and a magazine page, a day sheet and a ticket for the Markthalle.
