Round the Edge of the Balcony
Both chronologies tell how Eddie climbed onto the balcony during "Porch," was pulled off by security guards who took him for a fan, and dropped into the crowd, and how someone Five Horizons calls the tour manager came on dressed as Henry Rollins. The chronology says the show was first booked at the Opera House, and the concert calendar it hangs lists Pearl Jam there for April 4.

On Saturday, April 4, 1992, Pearl Jam played the Concert Hall in Toronto, which both chronologies head by that name; Five Horizons brackets 68m after its heading without stating what it measures. Of the two chronologies, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints an attendance, 1 800 (sold out), and names an opening act, Eleven, which the second advertisement it hangs bills as special guest. Of the two chronologies, only the first says the show was originally scheduled at the Opera House, where the calendar it hangs also lists Pearl Jam for April 4; the second advertisement and the ticket name the Concert Hall.
The show
From the Opera House to the Concert Hall
The calendar, opened here as a one-page PDF with a small image of the page, is MCA Concerts Canada's, and its SATURDAY APRIL 4 box prints FROM SEATTLE, PEARL JAM, OPERA HOUSE and Tickets $11.50 Advance, with no year. The second advertisement prints SATURDAY APRIL 4, PEARL JAM, WITH SPECIAL GUEST ELEVEN, CONCERT HALL and 888 YONGE ST, and the ticket prints HTZ-FM/MCA CONCERTS PRES., PEARL JAM, CONCERT HALL 888 YONGE and SAT APR 4/92 8PM, with GEN ADM $ 15.50 at its foot. The Spring Tour itinerary lists Sat 4/4 at the Concert Hall with a capacity of 1800, the figure of the chronology's attendance line; a capacity is not an attendance, so the match confirms nothing and settles neither.
The Performance
The chronology's set runs "Oceans," "Even Flow," "Why Go," "Jeremy," "Deep," "Alive," "Black," "State of Love and Trust" and "Once," then an improvisation it labels, then "Porch," with an encore of "Breath," a bracketed label and "Leash." Five Horizons' single list has no improvisation, puts "Happy Birthday" in place of that bracketed label, and marks no encore, so the two lists differ in three places.
Both notes, counted here as one source, say that during "Porch" Eddie climbed onto the balcony and worked his way round the hall along its edge, until about three quarters of the way round two security guards, taking him for a fan, pulled him off and let him go when they saw their mistake. Eddie then stood on the balcony's edge and dropped onto the crowd below, which caught him; in both notes he then "swims" to the stage and picks up the microphone to speak to the room. Both notes say "Happy Birthday" was sung to Mike and that Eddie introduced Henry Rollins, after which someone dressed as Rollins came on, a huge happy face in magic marker on that person's back. Five Horizons calls that person the tour manager, as does the house file, which repeats its sentence naming him, where the chronology gives a name without a role; the chronology puts the birthday song after the Rollins entrance, Five Horizons before it. The review the chronology hangs, marked SPECIAL TO THE STAR and headed Seattle grunge Pearl Jam dancing on edge of glory, has the singer calling for the house lights and crawling along the balcony's rim, fans 15 feet below.
The Next Step
Detroit, the night before, is told in Seven-Fifty in Advance. Both chronologies put the next show at Cumnock Hall in Lowell on April 6; it is told in Bad Acoustics at Cumnock Hall.
Recording & sound
What the Record Preserves
Eight elements hang under this date on the chronology's page, five distinct objects, all opened here; Five Horizons hangs nothing under its entry. The house's folder for the night holds one text file, a ConcertInfo file of the Twenty-Ten series whose heading is Five Horizons', its bracketed 68m included, and whose note repeats Five Horizons' birthday and Rollins sentences word for word, so the two count as one source. The file lists thirteen tracks, "Happy Birthday" twelfth and a thirteenth that joins a bracketed label to "Leash," and calls the recording complete according to Five Horizons' setlist and information, a claim about the recording, which it says was digitized on October 26, 1999. Toronto comes down to one shared note, a show first placed at the Opera House, an attendance and an act that of the two chronologies only the first prints, a capacity that is not an attendance, and two lists that differ in three places.
