Trocadero Theatre, Trocadero Club

· Trocadero Theatre · Philadelphia

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads the room Trocadero Theatre, puts 1 140 in it, marks the night sold out and names Eleven and Pond as opening acts; Five Horizons heads it Trocadero Club, prints no attendance and no act, and brackets 80m after its heading without stating what it measures. In the note the two share, the singer sang two lines of "Release" unaccompanied before "Alive," went up a wall and along the balcony during the jam and fell into the crowd's hands, and sang the second half of "Leash" from a crew member's shoulders.

On Friday, April 10, 1992, Pearl Jam played Philadelphia, at a room the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads Trocadero Theatre and Five Horizons Trocadero Club. The chronology's attendance line reads 1 140 (sold out); Five Horizons prints none, so of the two chronologies only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology marks the night sold out, and no markup title among the objects the page hangs carries the mark. Of the two chronologies, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology names opening acts, Eleven and Pond; Five Horizons prints none. Five Horizons brackets 80m after its heading, a figure the chronology does not print; what it measures is not stated. The two notes are near-identical, differing in the form of the singer's name and in punctuation, and are one source: the singer sang two lines of "Release" unaccompanied before "Alive," the crowd called a count-in for "Porch," and the singer went up a wall and along the balcony during the jam, fell back into the crowd's hands and later sang the second half of "Leash" from a crew member's shoulders.

The show

An Advertisement, an Untitled File Named as a Review, and a Ticket

The chronology's page links four objects under the date: an advertisement whose markup title is Ad, a file named as a review, linked as a PDF with an image file of the same name beside it, both untitled in the markup, and a ticket whose markup title is Ticket. No markup title under the date carries a credit. The chronology heads the room Trocadero Theatre and prints the city as Philadelphia, PA, USA; Five Horizons heads it Trocadero Club and prints Philadelphia, PA, with 80m in brackets, and neither name for the room is settled against the other. Attendance and opening acts are the chronology's fields; Five Horizons' entry has no line for either.

The Performance

Both documents run "Oceans," "Even Flow," "Why Go," "Jeremy" and "Deep," then "Alive," "Black," "State of Love and Trust," "Once" and "Porch," and close with "Garden," "Leash" and "Rockin' in the Free World." Of the two chronologies, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology lists "Release," in brackets, between "Deep" and "Alive"; it sets the last three apart as an encore, where Five Horizons prints one run of thirteen with no encore line. Both notes have the singer sing two lines of "Release" unaccompanied before "Alive," where the chronology's bracketed entry sits, and have the crowd call out a count-in for "Porch." During the jam, both say, the singer went up a wall, worked along the balcony and fell backwards from its far side into the crowd's hands, which carried him to the stage again before the jam was over. During "Leash," both say, he climbed onto a crew member in a cape and a hat and sang the song's second half from the crew member's shoulders.

The Next Step

Boston, two nights before, is told in Cables Across the Ceiling at the Axis. Both documents put the next entry the following night in New York, for Saturday Night Live, at a building that of the two chronologies only the first names, NBC Studios; it is told in Two Songs and a Sketch.

What the Record Preserves

Four objects hang under this date on the chronology's page, the advertisement, the file named as a review, as a PDF with an image file of the same name, and the ticket. Philadelphia comes down to a room named two ways, an attendance with a sold-out mark and two opening acts that, of the two chronologies, only the first prints, a bracketed figure that only the second prints, a bracketed "Release" in the first's list and not the second's, an encore line in the first and not the second, and one note printed twice.
