One List Marks an Encore

· Ritchie Coliseum · College Park

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology puts 1 750 in Ritchie Coliseum and marks the night sold out, names Follow for Now as the opening act and sets four songs apart as an encore; Five Horizons prints no attendance and no support, brackets 70m after its heading without stating what it measures, and prints the same titles in one run. The house's ConcertInfo information file numbers those titles straight through with a track of speech before "Porch," marks the last song as cut at its end, and calls its recording complete but for that cut, judged by Five Horizons' own list.

On Monday, April 13, 1992, Pearl Jam played College Park, at a room the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads Ritchie Coliseum @ University of Maryland and Five Horizons Ritchie Coliseum, University of Maryland, each as printed. The chronology's attendance line reads 1 750 (sold out), and Five Horizons prints none; of the two chronologies, only the first marks the night sold out, and the markup title of the one object the chronology's page links under the date does not carry the mark. Of the two chronologies, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology names an opening act, Follow for Now; the Five Horizons block names no support, and the house's information file names none. Five Horizons brackets 70m after its heading, a figure the chronology does not print; what it measures is not stated, and neither chronology prints a note for the night.

The show

A Ticket and an Information File

The chronology's page hangs two elements for the date, one object, a ticket whose markup title carries a credit, not taken. The first line of the house's ConcertInfo information file is Five Horizons' heading for the night, the bracketed 70m included, and it says it checked its recording against the setlist and information on the Five Horizons site, so it is not independent of Five Horizons and is counted with it as one source.

The Performance

Both list "Wash," "Once," "Even Flow," "State of Love and Trust," "Alive," "Black," "Deep," "Jeremy," "Why Go" and "Porch," then "Garden," "Outshined," "Leash" and "Rockin' in the Free World"; the chronology sets the last four apart on an encore line, and Five Horizons prints one run with no encore marker. Both bracket "Outshined": the chronology prints "(Outshined)," as an item of its own, and Five Horizons joins it to "Leash" with a slash as one entry, the bracket and the join each document's, reconciled nowhere.

The Next Step

New York, the night before, is told in One Title Listed Three Ways. Athens, three nights later, at Legion Field, is told in To the Soundboard and Back.

What the Record Preserves

One object hangs under this date on the chronology's page, the ticket, and the house holds one text file for the night, a ConcertInfo information file. The file numbers fourteen tracks: the ten titles of the main set, a track of speech labelled at ten before "Porch," then "Garden," "Outshined" bracketed and joined to "Leash," and "Rockin' in the Free World," which it marks as cut at its end; it sets no encore apart, so of the three lists only the chronology's marks one. It calls its recording complete apart from the missing part of "Rockin' in the Free World," judged against the setlist and information on the Five Horizons site, a claim about the recording, not the concert. College Park comes down to an attendance and a sold-out mark that of the two chronologies only the first prints, a support act it alone names, a set both print with an encore marked by one, and a house file that measures its own recording against Five Horizons.
