A Halt Near the End of Porch

· Unicorn Club · Houston

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology puts 3 000 in a room it heads The Unicorn and marks the night sold out; Five Horizons heads it Unicorn Club, prints no attendance, and brackets 60m after its heading without stating what it measures. The house's information file repeats Five Horizons' heading and its sentence on the halt, and lists no track for "Rockin' in the Free World" with Soundgarden.

On Thursday, April 30, 1992, Pearl Jam played Houston, at a room the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads The Unicorn and Five Horizons Unicorn Club. Of the two chronologies, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints an attendance, 3 000, and it marks the night sold out; Five Horizons prints none. Both print a supporting line naming Soundgarden, the field by which the chronology marks the act Pearl Jam played before; the chronology names Swervedriver and Monster Magnet as the opening acts, and Five Horizons names none. Five Horizons brackets 60m after its heading without stating what it measures. The two notes open with the same sentence, on a halt near the end of "Porch," and then part: the chronology has Pearl Jam's members join Soundgarden's set for "Rockin' in the Free World," which Five Horizons states only as a condition of the date being right.

The show

One Room Under Two Names

The chronology heads the night The Unicorn and Five Horizons Unicorn Club, and neither prints a capacity for the room. Four objects hang under the date on the chronology's page, named by their markup titles: a poster; the Live In Texas poster, whose file the page also hangs under April 28 and April 29; a ticket; and an image whose markup title reads Backstage and names the singer. Five Horizons' entry closes with a line reading poster.

The Performance

Both documents run "Wash," "Once," "Suggestion," "Even Flow," "State of Love and Trust" and "Alive," then an improvisation, "Black," "Deep," "Jeremy," "Why Go" and "Porch," then a second improvisation and "Leash" to close. The chronology prints "Suggestion" in parentheses where Five Horizons prints it plain; it sets the last two apart as an encore where Five Horizons prints one line; and it lists the first improvisation and "Black" as two entries where Five Horizons joins them with a slash and attaches a parenthetical label to the improvisation, which the chronology's Improv does not carry. Both notes tell of a halt near the end of "Porch": someone in the crowd looked to be hurt, and paramedics were sent for. The chronology adds that Pearl Jam's members came on at the close of Soundgarden's set for "Rockin' in the Free World"; Five Horizons instead cites MTV footage in which the band and Soundgarden perform the song together and, provided the date is correct, puts the band in Soundgarden's set.

The Next Step

Dallas, the night before, is told in One List for the Bronco Bowl. Both chronologies put the next show two nights later, on May 2, at Lawrence; it is told in Free on the Hill, Counted Two Ways.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The house holds one text file for the night, a ConcertInfo information file whose heading is Five Horizons' heading, bracketed 60m included, and whose note is Five Horizons' sentence on the halt, one source with it. It lists thirteen numbered tracks, a track labelled Introduction and then the titles both chronologies share in their order, with the first improvisation and "Black" as one track and "Porch" and the second improvisation as another; it has no track for "Rockin' in the Free World" with Soundgarden. It says the recording is complete when set against Five Horizons' setlist and information, a claim about the recording, not the concert, and it states no tape source, generation or lineage for it. Houston comes down to one room under two names, an attendance and two opening acts that of the two chronologies only the first prints, a 60m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, a halt in "Porch" that both notes and the house file carry, and a turn with Soundgarden that one chronology states and the other makes conditional.
