Intro Music by Public Enemy

· Mesa Amphitheatre · Mesa

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology puts 4 950 in the Mesa Amphitheatre and marks the night sold out; Five Horizons prints no attendance and brackets no figure after its heading. Both notes put the ticket at $10, have Jeff watching Tribe After Tribe from the stage's side, and name Public Enemy's "By the Time I Get to Arizona" as the band's intro music.

On Saturday, May 9, 1992, Pearl Jam played the Mesa Amphitheatre in Mesa, which Five Horizons spells Mesa Amphitheater. Of the two chronologies, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints an attendance, 4 950, and it marks the night sold out; Five Horizons prints none. Both name Tribe After Tribe, the chronology as the opening act and Five Horizons as the support act. Five Horizons' heading brackets no figure, and of the two chronologies only the first prints a set. The two notes tell the same four things in nearly the same words, and Five Horizons adds a line on "Rockin' in the Free World."

The show

A Ten-Dollar Ticket

Both notes put the ticket at $10 and say the show sold out roughly a week ahead of the night. They say Jeff watched Tribe After Tribe's set from the stage's side. Neither chronology prints a capacity for the room or a soundcheck for the night.

The Performance

The chronology lists "Release," "Even Flow," "Why Go," "Jeremy," "Suggestion," in parentheses as it prints it, "Leash," "Alive," "Black," "State of Love and Trust," an improvisation, "Once" and "Porch," with an encore of "Deep" and "Rockin' in the Free World"; Five Horizons prints no set for the night, and the list is the chronology's. The chronology does not say what its parentheses mean. Both notes say the band's intro music was Public Enemy's "By the Time I Get to Arizona," and that during the set the singer mentioned voting in favour of Martin Luther King Day. Five Horizons' note adds that "Rockin' in the Free World," which it gives by its initials, was played, likely as a closing song; the chronology lists it last in its encore.

The Next Step

Bozeman, two nights before, is told in Two Guitars Into the Crowd. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, on May 10, in Tijuana, at a room the chronology heads Iguanas and Five Horizons Iguana's; it is told in Iguanas, Spelled Two Ways.

What the Record Preserves

Two objects hang under this date on the chronology's page, images whose markup titles each name a member of the band before a credit. Mesa comes down to an attendance and a sold-out mark on a line only the first chronology prints, a sell-out roughly a week ahead that both notes report, one act under two labels, a set list that of the two chronologies only the first prints, two notes that tell the same four things in nearly the same words, and two images whose markup titles name members of the band.
