Taken for a Stage-Diver

· Finsbury Park · London

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology names the festival In The Park 92 Festival and Five Horizons heads it Finsbury Park Festival, and of the two chronologies only Five Horizons prints act lines, Red Kross, L7 and Therapy on its support act line and The Cult on its supporting line. Both notes praise that night's "Black," tell of a dedication of "Even Flow" to Dee from L7, and say that during "Porch" the singer went into the crowd and barely got back, security taking him for a stage-diver.

On Saturday, June 6, 1992, Pearl Jam played Finsbury Park in London, England, at a festival the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology names In The Park 92 Festival and Five Horizons heads Finsbury Park Festival. Five Horizons prints a support act line naming Red Kross, L7 and Therapy, in that order, and a supporting line naming The Cult; the chronology prints no act line of either kind. Neither chronology, nor any of the house's three text files, prints an attendance or a capacity, and Five Horizons brackets 60m after its heading without stating what it measures. Both chronologies print the same ten songs in the same order with "Rockin' in the Free World" as the encore, and their notes tell the same five things in nearly the same words.

The show

One Festival, Two Names

The chronology heads the night Finsbury Park, London, England, with the festival's name in parentheses, and Five Horizons makes Finsbury Park Festival its heading; the house's remaster series file names Finsbury Park, London, England, and no festival, and no name is settled against another. The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line that names the band, the date and the city, with an info-file. Thirteen objects hang under this date on the chronology's page: an image whose markup title is Poster; one titled Ticket; nine images whose markup titles name members of the band before a credit, the singer alone in six, another member alone in one, and the singer with two others in two; and two untitled links into the chronology's remaster series, a zip and a text file.

The Performance

Both chronologies run "Wash," "Once," "Why Go," "Jeremy," "Deep," "Alive," "Black," "State of Love and Trust," "Even Flow" and "Porch," with "Rockin' in the Free World" as the encore. Their notes open by praising that night's "Black" and say the dedication of "Even Flow" went to Dee from L7, with a reason each note quotes. Both go on to say, in a sentence that names no song, that lyrics were changed. They say the singer encouraged the audience to tape shows, and that during "Porch" he hopped into the crowd and barely got back onto the stage, as security took him for a stage-diver.

The Next Step

Nürburg, the night before, is told in I've Got a Feeling in the Encore. Both chronologies put the next show two nights later, on June 8, at the Pinkpop Festival in Landgraaf, Netherlands, which the chronology places at Megaland; it is told in A Camera Crane During Porch.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The house holds three text files for the night: the remaster series' information file, its fingerprint file and a transfer log. The information file names the band, the date and the park; its source line gives a BBC Transcription Services CD, with patches from a Westwood One Radio Broadcast CD marked SV 002, its lineage runs from FLAC through WAV and dEQ to FLAC, and its notes report equalisation for tonal balance and a volume boost. Neither chronology's entry for the night mentions a broadcast. The information file lists eleven tracks, the ten songs of both set lines and "Rockin' in the Free World," in the chronologies' order; it dates its compilation September 2020 and credits a compiler. The fingerprint file lists eleven FLAC files named as those tracks are. The transfer log records nine MP3 transfers of eight files numbered 01 to 08 and named for the songs, the fourth sent twice, between 00:39 and 01:37 on a date it prints 100.02.04. It has no file for "Once," "Porch" or "Rockin' in the Free World," and it numbers "Why Go" 02, where the information file numbers it 03. London comes down to one festival under two names, act lines that of the two chronologies only Five Horizons prints, ten songs and an encore both give alike, two notes that tell the same five things in nearly the same words, an information file whose source line names two discs, and a transfer log with no file for three of the songs.
