Three Little Birds After Footsteps

· City Square · Milan

Both notes describe much confrontation and interaction with the audience, some of whom, they say, were apparently displeased and wanted refunds, and both report that Italian TV broadcast the show. Both lists put "Three Little Birds" after "Footsteps," and of the two notes only the chronology's says the singer sang a little of it there.

On Wednesday, June 17, 1992, Pearl Jam played City Square in Milan, Italy, which both chronologies head by that name and neither ties to a festival. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology names Eleven as the opening act, where Five Horizons prints no act line, and neither chronology prints an attendance. Five Horizons brackets 75m after its heading without stating what it measures. Both notes describe much confrontation and interaction with the audience and report an Italian TV broadcast, and both lists put "Three Little Birds" after "Footsteps."

The show

City Square

Both chronologies head the night City Square, Milan, Italy, and Five Horizons prints its bracketed 75m on the heading's own line. The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line that names the band, the date and the city, with an info-file. Three objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page: an image whose markup title is Ticket and two untitled links into the chronology's remaster series, a zip and a text file.

The Performance

Both chronologies run "Oceans," "Even Flow," "Why Go," "Jeremy" and "State of Love and Trust," then an entry before "Black," then "Black" and "Alive," an entry before "Once," then "Once," "Footsteps," "Three Little Birds," which both print in parentheses, and "Deep," and close the set with an entry before "Porch" and "Porch" itself. Where the chronology prints Improv before "Black," Five Horizons prints a label in parentheses joined to "Black" with a slash, and where the chronology prints Improv before "Once," Five Horizons prints Improv with a label in parentheses, joined to "Once." Before "Porch" the chronology prints "When the Saints Go Marching In" in parentheses as an entry of its own, where Five Horizons prints a label worded differently, joined to "Porch" with a slash. The chronology's encore is "Suggestion," in parentheses, "Garden" and "Rockin' in the Free World," and Five Horizons' encore line gives the same three with the word jam joined to "Suggestion" by a slash. Both notes say that some in the audience were apparently displeased and wanted refunds, and both quote the singer's reply. Of the two notes, only the chronology's says the singer sang a little of Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds" after "Footsteps" and that Stone played riffs of "When the Saints Go Marching In" before "Porch."

The Next Step

Nuremberg, two nights before, is told in A Wish for a Smaller Venue. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, June 18, at the Volkshaus in Zurich; it is told in A Trilogy Explained.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The house holds two text files for the night: a remaster series file and its fingerprint list. The remaster series file names the band, the date and City Square, Milan, Italy, and lists three sources: a broadcast taken by audio cable through a Sony HT-DDW685 to a Sony PCM-D50, a master pro-shot VHS with "Footsteps" patched from a second-generation VHS, and a third whose chain passes through cass-m and DAT after a Sony ECM-909 and a Sony WM-D3. It describes a new stereo mix from the left channel of each pro source, the first on the right and the second on the left, the third supplying the opening two tracks and some talk; each source was equalised, and the second and third were speed-corrected to the first. It lists eighteen tracks, from an intro through the set to "Porch," with three improvisation tracks after "State of Love and Trust," "Alive" and "Deep," and then, after a blank line, "Suggestion," "Garden" and "Rockin' in the Free World." No track is named for "Three Little Birds," which both chronologies print, or for "When the Saints Go Marching In," which the chronology prints. It dates its compilation December 2020 and credits a compiler; the fingerprint file lists eighteen FLAC files named as the tracks are. Milan comes down to City Square, named alike in both chronologies, an opening act that of the two chronologies only the first prints, a 75m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, two notes of confrontation, refunds apparently wanted and an Italian TV broadcast, "Three Little Birds" after "Footsteps" in both lists, four entries the chronologies mark differently, and a house file of three sources with no track for that song.
