A Trilogy Explained

· Volkshaus · Zurich

Both chronologies print an attendance of 500, and both notes say the trilogy of "Alive," "Once" and "Footsteps" was performed and explained, quoting the explanation extensively. Both notes name "Shower the People" as a cover of a James Taylor song and "Brass in Pocket" as a Pretenders song whose lyrics were revised a little, and Five Horizons brackets 85 after its heading without stating what it measures.

On Thursday, June 18, 1992, Pearl Jam played the Volkshaus in Zurich, Switzerland, which both chronologies head by that name and neither ties to a festival. Both chronologies print an attendance of 500, and of the two only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology names an opening act, Eleven. Five Horizons brackets 85 after its heading without stating what it measures. Both notes say Pearl Jam was in a good mood, tell of the trilogy of "Alive," "Once" and "Footsteps," performed and explained, and end by praising the show and its "Porch."

The show

The Volkshaus

Both chronologies head the night Volkshaus, Zurich, Switzerland, and Five Horizons prints its bracketed 85 on the heading's own line, with no letter after the figure. Neither attendance line carries a sold-out mark, and the chronology lists Eleven under opening act, where Five Horizons prints no act line. Three objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page: an image whose markup title is Ad and two untitled links into the chronology's remaster series, a zip and a text file. Both notes say the singer recalled the last time Pearl Jam had played in Switzerland, in a small place with no amps.

The Performance

The chronology runs "Oceans," "Even Flow," "Why Go," "Jeremy" and "State of Love and Trust," then Improv, "Black," "Alive," Improv again, "Once," "Footsteps," "Deep" and "Leash," then "Shower the People" and "Brass in Pocket," each in parentheses and joined by a slash, and "Porch," with an encore of "Suggestion," in parentheses, "Garden" and "Rockin' in the Free World." Five Horizons prints the same songs in the same order on one set line, running Improv, "Suggestion" and "Garden," joined by slashes, and "Rockin' in the Free World" on after "Porch." Where the chronology prints Improv before "Black," Five Horizons prints Improv with a label in parentheses, and where it prints Improv before "Once," Five Horizons prints a label in parentheses joined to "Once" with a slash. Between "Leash" and "Porch," Five Horizons prints the word jam and, in one parenthesis, "Shower the People," "Brass in Pocket" and a third item. Both notes name "Shower the People" as a cover of a James Taylor song and "Brass in Pocket" as a Pretenders song whose lyrics were revised a little. Both notes quote the trilogy's spoken explanation extensively without naming who gave it, the chronology's quotation carrying a sentence that Five Horizons' lacks, and both have "Alive" open the trilogy. The chronology calls the "Once" that followed a raging version and has the singer announce the third act just before "Footsteps"; of the two chronologies, only Five Horizons gives "Once" a lead-in, which it quotes. Both notes quote a remark of the singer's about "Suggestion," and neither note says when in the show he made it.

The Next Step

Milan, the night before, is told in Three Little Birds After Footsteps. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, June 19, at the Rockhaus in Vienna; it is told in An Unusual Jam After Alive.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The house holds two text files for the night: a remaster series file and its fingerprint list. The remaster series file gives its source as a pre-FM DAT joined with two bootlegs it names. Its lineage runs FLAC, WAV, dEQ, FLAC, and its note says each source was equalised to a similar tonal balance for smooth transitions. It lists twenty tracks, the set from an intro to "Porch" with three improvisation tracks among the songs, then, after a blank line, a track marking the encore break, a fourth improvisation track, "Garden" and "Rockin' in the Free World." No track is named for "Suggestion," "Shower the People" or "Brass in Pocket." It dates its compilation May 2020 and credits a compiler; the fingerprint file lists twenty FLAC files named as the tracks are. Zurich comes down to one venue both chronologies name alike, an attendance of 500 in each, an 85 that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, a trilogy both notes say was performed and explained, two covers both name, one with its lyrics revised a little, one order of songs that the chronology divides into a set and an encore and Five Horizons runs as one, and a house file of three sources.
