An Unusual Jam After Alive

· Rockhaus · Vienna

Both notes say the trilogy appeared again that night, broken by an unusual jam after "Alive," and that the singer did not believe a claim that fans do not listen to the lyrics. The house's information file repeats Five Horizons' heading and note, and six objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page.

On Friday, June 19, 1992, Pearl Jam played the Rockhaus in Vienna, Austria, which both chronologies head by that name and neither ties to a festival. Of the two chronologies, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology names an opening act, Eleven, and Five Horizons brackets 78m after its heading without stating what it measures. Both lists run the same songs in the same order, and the two notes tell the night in nearly the same words. They say the trilogy appeared again, broken by an unusual jam after "Alive," that the singer did not believe a claim that fans do not listen to the lyrics, and that a cute improvisation followed "Deep."

The show

The Rockhaus

Both chronologies head the night Rockhaus, Vienna, Austria; Five Horizons prints its bracketed 78m on the heading's own line, and the house's information file repeats that heading, 78m included. The chronology lists Eleven under opening act, and Five Horizons prints no act line. Neither chronology prints an attendance or a capacity, and neither mentions a broadcast. Six objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page: an image whose markup title is Ticket and five images whose markup titles name the band. The chronology's entry carries no remaster series line, and none of the six is a link into that series.

The Performance

Both chronologies run "Oceans," "Even Flow," "Why Go," "Jeremy," "State of Love and Trust," "Black" and "Alive," then an entry before "Once," then "Once," "Footsteps" and "Deep," then an entry before "Leash," then "Leash" and "Porch," with an encore of "Garden" and "Rockin' in the Free World." The entry before "Once" is Improv in the chronology and Jam in Five Horizons, which joins it to "Once" with a slash; the entry before "Leash" is Improv in both, standing alone in the chronology and joined to "Leash" in Five Horizons. Both notes say the trilogy appeared again that night, broken by an unusual jam after "Alive." They say the singer spoke of someone interviewing him who had suggested that fans do not listen to the lyrics and that the band could sing nonsense syllables and still please the crowd. The singer, both notes say, did not believe it and would never do so. Both notes then tell of a cute improvisation after "Deep," and neither says which entry of the lists it is.

The Next Step

Zurich, the night before, is told in A Trilogy Explained. Both chronologies put the next show three nights later, on June 22, in Paris; it is told in The Trilogy in Order.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The house holds one text file for the night, a ConcertInfo information file. Its heading and its note are Five Horizons', one source with it, and its fifteen numbered tracks follow Five Horizons' set and encore lines in order, the improvisation Five Horizons joins to "Leash" taking a track of its own and "Rockin' in the Free World" given by its initials. It says the recording is complete when measured against Five Horizons' setlist and information, a claim about the recording, not the concert. It dates the concert's digitizing and clean-up to 10/31/99; it gives no source, equipment or lineage. Vienna comes down to one room both chronologies name alike, an opening act that of the two chronologies only the first prints, a 78m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, one order of songs with two entries marked differently, two notes in nearly the same words about a broken trilogy, a remark on the lyrics and a cute improvisation, six objects under the date, and an information file that repeats Five Horizons.
