Photos for Security

· Roskilde Festival · Roskilde

Security did not appear to know who the band were, both notes say, and the singer said that next time security would be given photos of the band. The house's information file repeats Five Horizons' heading and note word for word, and twenty-four objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page.

On Friday, June 26, 1992, Pearl Jam played the Roskilde Festival in Denmark, which the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology places at Roskilde Dyreskueplads in Roskilde and Five Horizons on its Orange stage, with no city. The chronology prints an attendance of 64 500 and Five Horizons 70,000, with no sold-out mark in either, and Five Horizons brackets 50m after its heading without stating what it measures. Both lists run the same songs in the same order, from "Redemption Song" to "Porch," and neither chronology prints an encore. Both notes tell of a fan beaten by security, and of the two chronologies, only Five Horizons ties the canceled rest of the tour to that incident.

The show

The Roskilde Festival

The chronology names the festival in parentheses, and Five Horizons the stage, with its bracketed 50m on the heading's own line. Neither chronology's text names another act on the bill. Twenty-four objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page: an image whose markup title is Poster; an untitled PDF whose file name reads program, with an image named the same; nineteen images whose markup titles name members of the band, thirteen of them before a credit; and two untitled links into the chronology's remaster series, a zip and a text file. The chronology closes the entry with a remaster series line naming the band, the date and the city, with an info-file. Under the same date Five Horizons also marks the release of the Singles soundtrack.

The Performance

Both chronologies run "Redemption Song," "Even Flow," "Why Go," "Jeremy," "Deep," "Alive," "Black" and "State of Love and Trust," then an entry before "Once," then "Once" and "Porch." There the chronology prints Improv in parentheses, where Five Horizons joins a label in parentheses to "Once" with a slash. The chronology marks "Redemption Song" Eddie solo, its note saying he played it before the others joined him on stage; Five Horizons neither marks the song nor mentions it in its note. Both notes have the singer joke about the crowd's size and say security beat a fan, band members and the tour manager jumped into the crowd, and security did not appear to know who the band were. The singer was angry, both say, and said that next time security would be given photos of the band. Of the two chronologies, only Five Horizons adds that after the theft of his journal in Stockholm the night before, together with this incident and the exhaustion of almost ten months on tour, the rest of the tour was canceled.

The Next Step

Stockholm, the night before, is told in A Drink From a Shoe. Both chronologies mark all their dates from June 27 to July 5 canceled, six in the chronology and seven in Five Horizons, and put the next show twenty-two days later in Mountain View; it is told in Summertime Rolls in Parentheses. Of the two, only Five Horizons lists Torhout, and it dates Belfort July 2 where the chronology has July 3.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The house holds three text files for the night: a ConcertInfo information file, a remaster series file and its fingerprint list. The information file's heading and note are Five Horizons' word for word, Orange stage and bracketed 50m included, one source with it. Its ten numbered items give the songs in order, a label joined to "Once" as in Five Horizons, and a remark that a few seconds of "Once" are missing. It says the recording is complete but for that part of "Once" when measured against Five Horizons' setlist and information, a claim about the recording, not the concert. It dates the concert's digitizing and clean-up to 10/31/99. The remaster series file says digi-noise at the end of "Even Flow" was patched from a second chain through DAT and the first 2.5 minutes from VHS-2. Its ten tracks run from "Redemption Song" to "Porch" with no improvisation track, and it dates its compilation January 2022 and credits a compiler. Roskilde comes down to a site and a stage, two attendances, a fan beaten by security, a canceled tour that of the two chronologies only Five Horizons explains, and three house files.
