A Climb and a Dive

· Thunderbird Stadium · Vancouver

The two notes tell the climb and the dive in nearly the same words, the chronology naming the singer Eddie and Five Horizons Ed, and neither places them in so many words during "Porch." Seven objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page, among them images whose markup titles read Schedule and Map.

On Tuesday, July 21, 1992, Pearl Jam played Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver, which the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads by that name and Five Horizons as Thunderbird Stadium, UBC, both under Lollapalooza. Of the two chronologies only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints an attendance, 30 000 with a sold-out mark, and a set list, and Five Horizons' heading brackets no figure. Both notes call the performance very intense, with its high point during "Porch," the set's closing song, and both tell of the singer climbing the scaffolding to one side of the stage, then diving into the crowd. Of the two chronologies only the first adds that the show took three days to sell out.

The show

A Stadium Headed Two Ways

The chronology heads the night Thunderbird Stadium, Vancouver, BC, with Lollapalooza Festival in parentheses, and Five Horizons Thunderbird Stadium, UBC, in Vancouver, British Columbia, with Lollapalooza in parentheses and no bracketed figure. The chronology's attendance line reads 30 000 with a sold-out mark, and Five Horizons prints no attendance line for the night. Of the two chronologies only the first says the show took three days to sell out, and neither says when tickets went on sale. Neither chronology's lines for the night name another act or say in what order the acts played.

The Performance

The chronology runs "Oceans," "Even Flow," "Why Go," "Jeremy," "Deep," "Alive," "Black," "Once" and "Porch," and Five Horizons prints no set line for the night, so the list is the chronology's. Both notes call the performance very intense and put its high point during "Porch," which closed the set. Each then tells how the singer climbed the scaffolding to one side of the stage, dived into the crowd, and how the whole stadium went wild. Apart from the chronology's sentence on the sell-out, the two notes are the same sentences but for the singer's name, Eddie in the chronology and Ed in Five Horizons, and neither says in so many words that the climb and the dive came during "Porch."

The Next Step

Mountain View, two nights before, is told in Deep for the Photographers. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, July 22, at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Bremerton; it is told in Back-Up for Soundgarden.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

Seven objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page: an image whose markup title is Schedule, one titled Map, one titled Ticket, and four images whose markup titles name the singer, each before a credit. Neither chronology's entry mentions a recording of the night. Vancouver comes down to one stadium the two chronologies head differently, an attendance, a sold-out mark, a three-day sell-out and a set list that of the two chronologies only the first prints, two notes that tell one very intense performance, a climb and a dive in nearly the same words, and seven objects under the date.
