Back-Up for Soundgarden

· Kitsap County Fairgrounds · Bremerton

During Soundgarden's set, both notes put the singer at a mic beside the drumkit, singing back-up on "Outshined," the chronology naming him Eddie and Five Horizons Ed. The house's information file repeats Five Horizons' heading and the sentence of its note about "Outshined," and eleven objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page.

On Wednesday, July 22, 1992, Pearl Jam played the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Bremerton, at a festival the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads the Lollapalooza Festival and Five Horizons Lollapalooza. Of the two chronologies, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints an attendance, 25 000, marked sold out, and Five Horizons brackets 45m after its heading without stating what it measures. Both lists run the same ten songs in one order, from "Even Flow" to "Rockin' in the Free World," and the chronology's list carries one entry more. Both notes say the singer sang a line of a Beatles song before "Porch" and joined in on back-up vocals during Soundgarden's set. Of the two notes, only the chronology's tells of a crush below the singer and a warning he gave.

The show

Kitsap County Fairgrounds

Both chronologies head the night Kitsap County Fairgrounds, Bremerton, WA, and Five Horizons prints its bracketed 45m on the heading's own line. Neither chronology lists the day's bill or gives its running order. Under the same date, before the concert's entry, Five Horizons prints a separate entry saying that the "Jeremy" single was released and its video began circulating on MTV, an entry the chronology does not carry and Five Horizons does not tie to the show. Eleven objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page: two images whose markup title is Ad, one titled Ticket, and eight images whose markup titles name members of the band, each before a credit, two of them headed Backstage and naming Chris Cornell as well. The chronology's entry carries no remaster series line, and none of the eleven is a link into that series.

The Performance

Both chronologies run "Even Flow," "Why Go," "Jeremy," "Suggestion," "Deep," "Alive," "Black" and "Once," then "Porch" and "Rockin' in the Free World," and neither marks an encore. The chronology prints "Suggestion" in parentheses, and Five Horizons prints it plain; neither says what the parentheses mean. Between "Once" and "Porch" the chronology's list prints one more entry, in parentheses, which Five Horizons' list does not carry. Both notes say the singer sang a line of a Beatles song before "Porch." They say that during Soundgarden's set he joined in on back-up vocals for "Outshined," at a mic beside the drumkit, in nearly the same words, the chronology naming him Eddie and Five Horizons Ed. Of the two notes, only the chronology's tells of a crush below the singer and a warning he gave, and it does not say at what point in the set.

The Next Step

Both chronologies put the previous show on the night before, July 21, at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver; it is told in A Climb and a Dive. Neither chronology has an entry for July 23 or July 24; both put the next show three nights later, on July 25, in Denver; it is told in Two Lists With Caveats.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The house holds one text file for the night, a ConcertInfo information file. Its heading, 45m included, is Five Horizons' heading, and its note is the second sentence of Five Horizons' note, about "Outshined," so both are one source with Five Horizons. Its ten numbered items give Five Horizons' list in the same order, and the first, "Even Flow," carries a remark that its beginning is clipped. It says the recording is complete, but for a missing part of "Even Flow," when measured against Five Horizons' setlist and information, a claim about the recording, not the concert. It dates the concert's digitizing and clean-up to 11/4/99; it gives no source, equipment or lineage. Bremerton comes down to one fairground both chronologies name alike, an attendance of 25 000 that of the two chronologies only the first prints, a 45m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, ten songs in one order with one more entry in the chronology's list, back-up vocals for Soundgarden and a Beatles line in both notes, a crush and a warning that of the two notes only the chronology's tells of, eleven objects under the date, and an information file that repeats Five Horizons.
