Two Lists With Caveats

· Fiddlers Green Amphitheatre · Denver

Each chronology qualifies its own list, the chronology's note saying "Why Go" and "Alive" may be out of order and Five Horizons calling its list incomplete and out of order. Of the two notes, only the chronology's records a tag in "Once," which it presents as a response to a decent-sized crowd that early in the day.

On Saturday, July 25, 1992, Pearl Jam played Denver, at a venue the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre and Five Horizons Fiddler's Green, during a festival the first calls the Lollapalooza Festival and the second Lollapalooza. Neither chronology prints an attendance, and Five Horizons brackets no figure after its heading. The two lists share seven songs, closing with "Porch" and "Rockin' in the Free World," but the chronology's list opens with "Once," which Five Horizons does not print, and the two run the rest in different orders. Both notes have the singer climb the scaffolding and quote a remark he made to the crowd, and of the two chronologies, only Five Horizons gives a running order, its note having PJ play second.

The show

Fiddler's Green

The chronology heads the night Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre, Denver, CO, and Five Horizons Fiddler's Green, Denver, CO, with no bracketed figure; neither form is settled against the other. Neither chronology prints an attendance or an opening act. Of the two chronologies, only Five Horizons gives the day's running order, and that in part: its note has PJ as the second band to play, and neither says who played first.

The Performance

The chronology runs "Once," "State of Love and Trust," "Even Flow," "Jeremy," "Why Go," "Alive," "Porch" and "Rockin' in the Free World," and its note says "Why Go" and "Alive" may be out of order. Five Horizons runs "Even Flow," "Why Go," "Alive," "Jeremy," "State of Love and Trust," "Porch" and "Rockin' in the Free World," with no "Once," and adds in parentheses that its list is incomplete and out of order. Neither chronology marks an encore. The chronology's note says "Once" carried a tag, which it quotes and presents as a response to a decent-sized crowd that early in the day, and it has the singer climb the scaffolding during "Porch." Five Horizons calls the performance spirited and has him climbing the scaffolding, without naming a song. Both notes then quote a remark he made to the crowd, in nearly the same words.

The Next Step

Bremerton, three nights before, is told in Back-Up for Soundgarden. Neither chronology has an entry for July 26; both put the next show two nights later, on July 27, at Riverport, which the chronology places in St. Louis and Five Horizons in Maryland Heights; it is told in Out on a Narrow Beam.

What the Record Preserves

Three objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page: an image whose markup title is Ticket and two images whose markup titles name Eddie Vedder, each before a credit. The chronology's entry carries no remaster series line, and none of the three is a link into that series. Denver comes down to one venue the two chronologies name differently, no attendance in either, two lists that share seven songs and each qualify their order, an opening "Once" that of the two lists only the chronology's prints, a climb up the scaffolding and a remark to the crowd in both notes, a place in the day's order that of the two chronologies only Five Horizons gives, and three objects under the date.
