Out on a Narrow Beam

· Riverport Amphitheatre · St Louis

In closely parallel words, the two notes follow the singer up the scaffolding to its top, then to the stage's middle and out along the beam, and have him come back shirtless before the song was finished. Three objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page: an image whose markup title is Backstage pass, one titled Ticket and one whose markup title names Pearl Jam.

On Monday, July 27, 1992, Pearl Jam played the Riverport Amphitheatre in St. Louis, as the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads the night; Five Horizons spells the venue Riverport Amphitheater and places it in Maryland Heights, and both tie the night to Lollapalooza. The chronology prints an attendance of 20 000, marked sold out, and a set list of eight songs, where Five Horizons prints neither and brackets no figure after its heading. Both notes say that during "Porch" the singer climbed the scaffolding at the stage's side and crawled out along a beam toward the crowd, as far as the lawn section. Both add that the crowd feared he would fall, and both end with a ban on playing Riverport for a time afterwards.

The show

Riverport, in St. Louis or Maryland Heights

The chronology heads the night Riverport Amphitheatre, St. Louis, MO, and Five Horizons Riverport Amphitheater, Maryland Heights, MO; neither place is settled against the other. The chronology calls the festival the Lollapalooza Festival and Five Horizons calls it Lollapalooza, and Five Horizons brackets no figure after its heading. The chronology prints an attendance of 20 000, sold out, where Five Horizons prints no attendance line, and neither chronology gives the day's running order.

The Performance

The chronology runs "Even Flow," "Once," "Breath," "Why Go," "Jeremy," "Deep," "Alive" and "Porch," with no encore marked, and Five Horizons prints no set line for the night. The two notes then tell one account in closely parallel words, the chronology naming the singer Eddie and Five Horizons Ed. During "Porch," they say, he climbed the scaffolding at the stage's side to its top, crawled to the stage's middle and kept crawling toward the crowd on a beam, as far as the lawn section. The crowd went wild, both say, afraid that he would fall because the beam was so narrow. He came back shirtless to the stage, the song was then finished, and both notes quote a remark of his. The chronology's note ends with a ban on Pearl Jam playing Riverport for a time afterwards, and Five Horizons' with the same ban on PJ; neither says who imposed it or how long it lasted.

The Next Step

Denver, two nights before, is told in Two Lists With Caveats. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, July 28, at the Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati; it is told in From Why Go to Porch.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

Three objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page: an image whose markup title is Backstage pass, one titled Ticket and one whose markup title names Pearl Jam before a credit. The chronology's entry carries no remaster series line, and none of the three is a link into that series. St. Louis comes down to one venue the two chronologies spell and place differently, an attendance of 20 000 and a set list of eight songs that of the two chronologies only the first prints, a climb up the scaffolding and out along a narrow beam toward the lawn section in both notes, a shirtless return, a quoted remark and a ban from Riverport, and three objects under the date.
