Mudslides on the Lawn

· Blossom Music Center · Cleveland

Both notes say the downpour turned most of the lawn to mudslides and that Vedder and Cornell were seen there after the Soundgarden set, sliding together. Of the two notes, only the chronology's quotes the singer before "Deep," and Five Horizons prints an attendance of 19,000 where the chronology prints 18 500 and a sold-out mark.

On Wednesday, July 29, 1992, Pearl Jam played the Blossom Music Center in Cleveland, which both chronologies head by that name and tie to Lollapalooza, the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology as the Lollapalooza Festival. The chronology's attendance line reads 18 500 (sold out) and Five Horizons' 19,000, two different figures, and of the two chronologies only the first marks the night sold out. Both lists open with "Summertime Rolls," which the chronology prints in parentheses, and run the same eight entries after it in the same order. The two notes differ over the crowd in the rain, the chronology telling of barricades that gave and a rush for the stage at "Deep," Five Horizons of a crowd intent on listening, and both close on a lawn turned to mudslides.

The show

The Blossom Music Center

Both chronologies name the venue Blossom Music Center and the city Cleveland, OH; the chronology closes its heading with Lollapalooza Festival in parentheses, and Five Horizons' heading runs onto a second line that holds Lollapalooza in parentheses. The chronology prints the attendance as 18 500 with a sold-out mark and Five Horizons as 19,000 with none, and neither figure is settled against the other. Neither chronology prints an act line, a soundcheck, a capacity or a show time, or brackets a figure after its heading.

The Performance

Both chronologies open the set with "Summertime Rolls," which the chronology prints in parentheses as an entry of its own and Five Horizons joins to "Why Go" with a slash, then run "Why Go," "Deep," "Jeremy," "Even Flow," "Garden" and "Alive," then Improv, then "Porch." Neither chronology says what the parentheses or the slash mean, or what the Improv was. The chronology's note says the singer spoke before "Deep," in words it quotes that touch on security and carry a dedication; Five Horizons' note has no such passage. The chronology's note goes on to say that the barricades gave as the band began "Deep" and that thousands rushed the stage, and gives two reasons for the rush: escaping the pouring rain and heaping adulation on their favorites. Five Horizons' note has the rain begin pouring about two songs into the band's set and says the crowd stayed very intent on listening. The two notes then close with the same two sentences: the downpour turned most of the lawn to mudslides, and Vedder and Cornell were seen on the lawn after the Soundgarden set, sliding together and, with fans, hitting plastic golf balls with a golf club.

The Next Step

Cincinnati, the night before, is told in From Why Go to Porch. Neither chronology prints a heading for July 30, and both put the next show two nights later, on July 31, at the Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston; it is told in A Heading and a Hyphen.

What the Record Preserves

Eight objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page: an image whose markup title reads Ticket before a credit; six images whose markup titles name members of the band, the singer alone in five, two of those before a credit, and two other members together in one; and an image whose markup title names Chris Cornell. Who is pictured is the chronology's identification in its markup. Cleveland comes down to one venue both chronologies name alike, a festival each names its own way, two different attendances with a sold-out mark in the first, one list both run alike after an opening entry each marks its own way, a remark before "Deep" and a rush for the stage that of the two notes only the chronology's tells, a downpour both report, a lawn turned to mudslides in both, and eight objects under the date.
