Waiting Out the NBA Finals

· University Theatre · Missoula

Of the two chronologies, only Five Horizons prints a second list, headed discrepancy, which adds "Rockin' in the Free World" and "Sonic Reducer." Both notes say the show was videotaped, from the balcony by the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's account and from the audience by Five Horizons'.

On Wednesday, June 16, 1993, Pearl Jam played the University Theatre in Missoula, which Five Horizons heads with the University of Montana after the theatre's name. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's attendance line reads 1 300 (sold out) and Five Horizons' 1,300, one figure in two forms, and both name Orgone Box, the chronology on its opening act line and Five Horizons on its support act line. Both notes put a wait of nearly one and a half hours down to the NBA finals, on television that night, and to the band's love of basketball. Of the two chronologies, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology tells of a tennis shoe thrown onto the stage from the crowd, which the singer took up, licked along the sole and tossed back.

The show

The University Theatre

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads the venue University Theatre and Five Horizons University Theatre, University of Montana, both in Missoula, and Five Horizons brackets 105m after its heading without stating what it measures. Of the two chronologies, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology marks the show sold out, and its note says notice came only a week before and that it sold out in twenty-five minutes. The same note calls Orgone Box a hard-rock act from the area, asked to open with four days' notice, and quotes an ASUM Programming representative at the University of Montana on the band's reasons for wanting the date. Neither chronology's entry prints a capacity or a soundcheck.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs "Animal," "Go," "Whipping," "Even Flow," "Dissident," "Once," "Glorified G," "Why Go," "Jeremy," "Elderly Woman," "Alive," "Black," "Blood," "Oceans," "Deep," "Leash" and "Rats," then an entry it sets in parentheses and "Porch," and its encore closes with "Baba O'Riley," "Garden" and "Indifference." Five Horizons runs the same titles in the same order as one set with no encore mark, and like the chronology it sets an entry in parentheses between "Rats" and "Porch," but it also prints a queried entry, a question mark with a label in parentheses, between "Once" and "Glorified G," where the chronology has none. It then prints a second list, headed discrepancy, which it does not explain; this one opens with "Go" before "Animal," lacks "Leash," "Baba O'Riley," "Garden" and the entry before "Porch," adds "Rockin' in the Free World" and "Sonic Reducer," and moves "Black" after "Rockin' in the Free World." Both notes say "Elderly Woman" and "Indifference" were among the songs played for the first time that night. Both say the show was videotaped, from the balcony in the chronology's account and from the audience in Five Horizons', and both say the photographs for Rolling Stone's cover story that fall were taken at the show, Five Horizons in parentheses.

The Next Step

San Francisco, thirty-four days before, is told in Billed Under Another Name; neither chronology prints a heading between that night and this one. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, June 17, at The Met in Spokane; it is told in Over Security and Back Again.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

Three objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page, images whose markup titles read Poster, then Eddie Vedder & Stone Gossard, then Pearl Jam, each before a credit. Who is pictured is the chronology's identification in its markup. Missoula comes down to one theatre headed two ways, one attendance in two forms, an opening band both chronologies name, a long wait through the NBA finals, first performances both notes record, a second list that of the two chronologies only Five Horizons prints, and three objects under the date.
