Duct Tape and a Devil Mask

· Stadio Bentegodi · Verona

Both notes have the singer duct-tape his shorts at the waist and legs, then throw himself into the audience twice off the arms of what they call the Zoo TV tour stage. Of the two lists, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's gives a parenthesised entry its own place between "Go" and "Porch," where Five Horizons joins it to "Porch" with a slash.

On Saturday, July 3, 1993, Pearl Jam played a second night at the Stadio Bentegodi in Verona, which both chronologies head by that name. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology gives an attendance of 45 000 (sold out) and Five Horizons none, and both print a supporting line naming U2. Both lists open with "Why Go" and close with "Rockin' in the Free World," with no encore in either, but they print a parenthesised entry differently. Their notes share one account, word for word but for the singer's name, of a shirt, a devil mask, a green fly mask and duct tape.

The show

A Second Night at the Bentegodi

Both chronologies name the venue Stadio Bentegodi and the city Verona, and Five Horizons brackets 45m after its heading without stating what it measures. An Emotional Fish appears on an opening-act line in the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's entry, while Five Horizons' names no act but U2. Neither entry prints a capacity, a show time or a price.

The Performance

Both chronologies run "Why Go," "Jeremy," "Even Flow," "Glorified G," "Daughter," "Alive" and "Go," then a parenthesised entry, then "Porch" and "Rockin' in the Free World," the chronology printing the parenthesised entry on its own and Five Horizons joining it to "Porch" with a slash. They also differ in the capitals of two entries, the closing title among them. The notes are one account in identical words, save that Five Horizons calls the singer Ed and the chronology Eddie. He wore a shirt carrying a name that the notes explain as Bono's given name, and tried again to enchant the audience in two masks, a devil's and a green fly mask. Having wrapped duct tape round his shorts at the waist and at both legs, he twice threw himself into the audience off the arms of what the notes call the Zoo TV tour stage.

The Next Step

The first Verona night, the night before, is told in First of Four in Italy. Neither chronology prints a heading for July 4 or July 5; both put the next show three nights later, on July 6, at the Stadio Flaminio in Rome; it is told in A Plug for Greenpeace and Amnesty.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

Two objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page: an image whose markup title identifies a setlist, before a credit, and one titled Ticket. The house holds one text file for the night, a playlist whose name gives the date and Verona, Italy, but no venue. Its ten numbered MP3 file names follow the chronology's ten entries: the first seven and the ninth carry the same titles in the same places, from "Why Go" to "Go" and then "Porch," the eighth stands between "Go" and "Porch" as a track of its own, where the chronology has its parenthesised entry, and the tenth is a longer form of the closing title. It gives no source, date, lineage or credit, and makes no statement about the recording. Verona's second night comes down to one stadium named alike in both chronologies, an attendance that of the two only the chronology prints, ten entries in the chronology and nine in Five Horizons over the same songs, one account in both notes of a shirt, two masks and two leaps into the audience, two objects under the date and a playlist of ten files.
