A Wooden Cross in the Third Encore

· Centre Robert Guertin · Hull

Five Horizons says the singer, very intoxicated in its words, came on for the third encore with a large wooden cross, and that someone was then brought up on stage to sit holding it through "Indifference." The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology says MCA Concerts Canada chose to release a further 500 tickets once the show had sold out in under a day.

On Tuesday, August 17, 1993, Pearl Jam played Hull, in an arena the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as the Centre Robert-Guertin in Gatineau (Hull) and Five Horizons as the Robert Guertin Arena. Of the two chronologies, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints an attendance, 4 500 (sold out), and both name Doughboys on a bill line, the chronology's opening act line and Five Horizons' support act line. The chronology lists seventeen songs over a setlist line and three encore lines, where Five Horizons prints no list and tells the set in its note. That note has the arena full and many getting in free, and a third encore in which the singer, very intoxicated by its account, came on stage with a large wooden cross.

The show

An Arena in Hull

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads the night at the Centre Robert-Guertin in Gatineau (Hull), QC, Canada, and Five Horizons at the Robert Guertin Arena in Hull, Quebec, with no country; Five Horizons' heading brackets no figure. The chronology's attendance line reads 4 500 (sold out), and its note says that after the show sold out in under a day, MCA Concerts Canada chose to release a further 500 tickets, of which Five Horizons says nothing. Five Horizons' note says the arena was full and that many people got in without paying. Doughboys stand on the chronology's opening act line and on Five Horizons' support act line, and neither chronology's entry prints a capacity, a show time or a ticket price.

The Performance

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's setlist line runs "Go," "Animal," "Rearviewmirror," "Once," "Even Flow," "Alive," "Why Go," "Black," "Jeremy" and "Porch," and three encore lines follow: "Deep," "Daughter" and "Oceans"; then "State of Love and Trust," "Baba O'Riley" and "Rockin' in the Free World"; then "Indifference." Five Horizons' note says the set began with "Go" and "Animal," that nearly all of Ten was played, "Release" and "Garden" excepted, and that "Rearviewmirror" came midway through the set as a slow love ballad, where the chronology's setlist line has it third of ten. In the third encore, it says, with half the lights on, the singer, whom it calls very intoxicated, came on stage carrying a large wooden cross with a skull at each end and a candle, or a candle shaped like a skull. It adds, without saying half of what, that half was already gone, and that someone was brought up to sit on stage holding the cross while the band played one song, "Indifference." The chronology's third encore line holds "Indifference" and nothing more, and its entry says nothing of the cross, the candle or the free entry.

The Next Step

Gimli, three nights before, is told in A Show Known as Mudfest; neither chronology prints a heading for August 15 or 16. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, August 18, at the CNE Stadium in Toronto, which Five Horizons names in full as the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) Stadium; it is told in Pearl Jam in Neil Young's Encore.

What the Record Preserves

Two objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page, an untitled PDF and an untitled image, each with review in its file name. Hull comes down to one arena under two names, an attendance and a sold-out mark that of the two chronologies only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints, Doughboys in both entries, seventeen songs set out against a paragraph of prose, a wooden cross that Five Horizons says came on in the third encore, and two untitled objects.
