From Daylight to Dark at the Gorge

· The Gorge · George

Both notes say the singer at one point suggested that the whole crowd sit and watch the sun go down, and that Mudhoney's Mark Arm joined the band for "Sonic Reducer," played as an encore. Of the two notes, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's tells of a surge of concertgoers from the aluminium bleachers on the raised berm down to the lower area in the first few songs.

On Sunday, September 5, 1993, Pearl Jam played George, WA, at the amphitheatre that the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as The Gorge Amphitheatre and Five Horizons as Gorge Amphitheater. The chronology prints an attendance of 19 000, marked sold out, and Five Horizons 19,000, unmarked, and both name Neil Young on a supporting line and Blind Melon on another. Both run the same titles in one order, sixteen from "Go" to "Porch" and then an encore of "Sonic Reducer" and "Leash." Both notes tell one account, and of the two only the chronology's adds a surge of fans early in the show and Mike's recollection of it.

The show

The Gorge

Five Horizons brackets 87m after its heading without stating what it measures, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's heading carries no figure. The chronology's supporting line adds Booker T. & The M.G.'s to Neil Young, and it heads Blind Melon's line opening act where Five Horizons heads it support act. Both notes call the Gorge a beautiful venue, with the show starting in daylight and ending in the dark. Neither chronology's entry prints a capacity, a show time or a ticket price.

The Performance

Both lists open with "Go," "Animal," "Once" and "Even Flow" and close the set on "Porch" before the encore. Of the two notes, only the chronology's tells of concertgoers surging from the aluminium bleachers on the raised berm down to the lower area in the first few songs, and it adds Mike's recollection of it. Both notes say the singer suggested that the whole crowd sit and watch the sun go down. They find it close to the band's patented Vs. show, the songs near their album versions but for a few lyric flubs. Both add that Mike played a short "Yellow Ledbetter" teaser before "Daughter," that Mudhoney's Mark Arm joined the band for "Sonic Reducer," played as an encore, and that the singer spoke about the MTV awards, Five Horizons' video award and the chronology's Video Music Awards. Otherwise the notes run nearly word for word, one account, Five Horizons writing Ed and PJ for Eddie and Pearl Jam.

The Next Step

The night before, both chronologies head two shows, in Vancouver and in Seattle; they are told in Neil Young on the Bill at B.C. Place and A Reported Club Show in Seattle. Both put the next show the following night, September 6, at Portland Meadows in Portland; it is told in Crazy Mary with Victoria Williams.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line naming the band, the date and the town, with an info-file, and Five Horizons' with a line reading show poster. Thirty objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page: images whose markup titles read Poster, before a credit, and Crowd, twice; an untitled PDF and image whose file names carry review; twenty-two naming band members, eight before a credit; one other image; and two untitled links into the remaster series. Who is pictured is the chronology's identification in its markup. The house holds three text files for the night in two folders: a playlist in one, and a remaster series file and its fingerprint list in the other. The playlist names eighteen numbered MP3 tracks, the chronology's setlist and encore in order, and gives no source, date or credit. The remaster series file, which gives its source as Sonic Studios to an unknown recorder, then DAT and CDR, heads itself with the band, the date, the venue and the town. Its lineage begins with CDR and WAV and ends in FLAC, and its notes say volume fluctuations were smoothed, loud claps removed and the volume raised, and the EQ set for tonal balance. It dates its compilation June 2023, and its nineteen tracks are the playlist's eighteen and an Encore Break where the chronology's encore begins, each given a line and a thirty-two-character value in the fingerprint list. The Gorge comes down to one amphitheatre named two ways, one attendance that of the two chronologies only the first marks sold out, eighteen titles in one order, one account and a surge in one note, thirty objects and three house files.
