Duct Tape at the Paramount

· Paramount Theatre · Denver

In both notes the jam on "Street Fighting Man," as the chronology spells it, brings Mike bound in duct tape and Jeff hoisted by his waistband. Five Horizons names two premieres for the night where the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology names one, and it lists "Why Go" twice.

On Monday, March 7, 1994, Pearl Jam played Denver's Paramount, which the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as the Paramount Theatre and Five Horizons as the Paramount Theater. Five Horizons' attendance line reads 2,000, where the chronology prints none, and The Frogs are the one act on the chronology's opening act line and on Five Horizons' support act line. Both chronologies count nineteen entries, Five Horizons with "Why Go" twice on one set line and the chronology with it once, over a setlist line and two encore lines. Both notes tell one account of the night in nearly the same words, from Jeff's jump onto Dave's kick drum during "Blood" to Mike in duct tape and Eddie in a Bill Clinton mask.

The show

Theatre or Theater

Five Horizons brackets 100m after its heading without stating what it measures, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's heading carries no figure. The Internet Archive item among the house's files for the night spells the venue as Five Horizons does. Neither chronology's entry prints a capacity, a show time or a ticket price.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist line runs "Oceans," "Go," "Animal," "Breath," "Blood," "Garden," "Not For You," "Rearviewmirror," "Why Go," "Jeremy" and "Alive," then one more entry and "Porch," thirteen in all. Its first encore line holds "Spin The Black Circle," "Glorified G," "Daughter," joined by a slash to "Rats," "Street Fighting Man" and "Rockin' In The Free World," and its second "Indifference," nineteen entries in all. Five Horizons prints one set line of nineteen and no encore line; of the two chronologies only it lists "Why Go" twice, fifth and tenth. Five Horizons joins both "Rats" and a jam to "Daughter." Neither chronology prints a soundcheck. Five Horizons' note names two premieres, "Spin the Black Circle" and "Not for You"; the chronology's note names that of "Not For You," and its entry for the night before gives "Spin The Black Circle" its premiere there. Mike smashed his guitar after "Porch," both notes say, and after "Daughter" came a "Rats" that they call mean. The chronology says a remark of Stone's, which it quotes, led into the Rolling Stones' "Street Fighting Man," a cover and jam it times at 11+ minutes; Five Horizons gives the remark to Stone with a question mark and names no band for the song. Near the end of that jam, both notes say, Eddie picked up some sticks and drummed a bit, Stone's baggy shorts reportedly fell to his ankles and stayed there, and Mike, facing him, played on. Eddie then wrapped Mike in duct tape from the knees down as the jam went on, they say, Mike lay down on the stage as a roadie pulled his pants down, and Mike then lifted Jeff off the ground by the waistband of his underwear. Both notes end with Eddie wearing a Bill Clinton mask.

The Next Step

Denver, the night before, at the same venue, is told in A Restart for State Of Love And Trust. Both chronologies put the next show two nights later, on March 9, at the Civic Center in Pensacola; it is told in Rock for Choice at the Civic Center.

What the Record Preserves

The chronology's entry carries no line for its remaster series. Three objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page: images whose markup titles read Setlist and Ticket, and one whose markup title reads Mike McCready & Eddie Vedder before a credit. The house holds four text files for the night, in two folders: two identical copies each of an Internet Archive item's metadata file and its files list. The metadata file titles the item with the date and the Paramount Theater in Denver, Colorado, dates its publication and its addition June 7, 2014, and names no source, lineage, equipment or recordist. The files list gives twenty-one audio files in MP3 on one disc, and their labels carry no "Breath" and no "Why Go," mark "Alive" as cut after thirty seconds and give four labels to spoken passages between songs. Denver on March 7 comes down to one venue spelled two ways, one attendance line, one act, nineteen entries a side that part over "Why Go," one account in both notes, three objects and one Internet Archive item.
