A Giant Turntable in Louisville

· Louisville Gardens · Louisville

Of the two chronologies, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology names Doug Pinnick of King's X as the guest singer on "Rockin' In The Free World," and only it has Eddie singing some of "Kentucky Woman." Both notes liken the music of the improvisation after "Dissident" more to "Not For You" than to "Satan's Bed."

On Thursday, March 24, 1994, Pearl Jam played Louisville Gardens in Louisville, the hall and city that both chronologies' headings name. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's attendance line reads 6 000 (sold out), where Five Horizons has no attendance line, and both name King's X, the chronology as its opening act and Five Horizons as its support act. Both lay the night out as a setlist and two encores running from "Rearviewmirror" to "Indifference," with twenty-five entries in the chronology and twenty-three in Five Horizons, which lacks the two entries the chronology sets in parentheses on their own. Both notes tell of a chatty night that Eddie enjoyed after a slow start, of an improvisation after "Dissident," and of a giant turntable that led into "Spin The Black Circle."

The show

The Gardens in Louisville

Both chronologies name the hall Louisville Gardens and the city Louisville, and neither heading brackets a figure. Neither chronology's entry gives the hall's capacity, a starting time or a ticket price.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs sixteen entries from "Rearviewmirror," "Whipping" and "Go" to "Blood," "Alive" and "Rockin' In The Free World," with Improv sixth, after "Dissident," and eighth an entry of its own in parentheses. Its first encore holds "Spin The Black Circle," "Kentucky Woman" in parentheses as an entry of its own, "Glorified G," Improv, "Daughter" joined by a slash to "I Won't Back Down" in parentheses, "Not For You," "Elderly Woman," which it follows with three dots, and "Porch," and its second holds "Indifference." Five Horizons gives the same entries in the same order without the two the chronology sets in parentheses on their own, printing improv/jam where the chronology's setlist has Improv and joining jam to the Improv of its first encore, which carries a label of its own, for twenty-three entries against the chronology's twenty-five. Neither chronology prints a soundcheck. Both notes call the night chatty and a fun one for Eddie once a slow start was behind it. After "Dissident," both say, came an improvisation in which Eddie sang two phrases that each quotes and improvised the rest of the words, its music closer to "Not For You" than to "Satan's Bed," a hybrid they call unusual. Both say he brought out a giant turntable, asked with sarcasm a question that each quotes and threatened that a Mariah Carey song would be played, which led into "Spin The Black Circle." The chronology says Doug Pinnick, the singer of King's X, joined Pearl Jam on "Rockin' In The Free World," while Five Horizons says King's X's singer joined, without naming him, for a song it gives by an abbreviation. Of the two chronologies, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology says that before "Glorified G," Eddie sang some of "Kentucky Woman," which it credits to Neil Diamond.

The Next Step

Cleveland, two nights earlier, is told in Sheraton Gibson in Cleveland. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, March 25, at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis; it is told in Suspicious Minds in Memphis.

What the Record Preserves

No remaster series line closes the chronology's entry. The chronology's page links five objects under the night's heading: an untitled PDF and an untitled image whose file names carry preview, a second such pair whose file names carry review, and an image whose markup title is Ticket. Louisville comes down to one hall named alike, an attendance printed, of the two chronologies, by the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology alone, one act on both bill lines, twenty-five entries against twenty-three, notes that share a turntable and part over naming the guest singer, and five objects under the date.
