Act of Love with Neil Young

· Constitution Hall · Washington

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note says the benefit's 6 000 tickets for its two shows went out by a postcard lottery, and that the postcards sent in came to more than 175 000. The chronology sets "Wish You Were Here" in parentheses as an entry of its own, where Five Horizons adds the word riffs and joins it to "Corduroy."

On Saturday, January 14, 1995, Pearl Jam played in Washington, D.C., at the hall the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as DAR Constitution Hall and Five Horizons and the house's information file as Constitution Hall. Both chronologies' headings add in parentheses that it was a Voters for Choice benefit. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's attendance line reads 3 000 (sold out) and Five Horizons' reads 3,700. The chronology's opening acts line names Neil Young & Crazy Horse and L7, and Five Horizons' support acts line names Lisa Germano, L7 and Neil Young, and neither line gives an order of play. Both list the same songs in the same order, from "Release" to "Act Of Love," and both notes say "Act Of Love" was played with Neil Young and without Eddie.

The show

Tickets by Postcard

Five Horizons brackets 88m after its heading without stating what it measures, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's heading carries no figure. The chronology's note says the 6 000 tickets for the benefit's two shows were offered by a postcard lottery through the mail, the postcards coming to more than 175 000. Five Horizons' note tells the same of the tickets to this show and puts the postcards at more than 175,000. Neither chronology's entry prints a capacity, a show time or a ticket price.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs fourteen entries from "Release" and "Spin The Black Circle" to "Rearviewmirror" and "Immortality," with "Wish You Were Here" fifth, in parentheses as an entry of its own between "Tremor Christ" and "Corduroy." Its encore line holds "Blood," "Indifference" and "Act Of Love." Five Horizons' set line gives the same songs in the same order in thirteen entries, setting the word riffs inside the parentheses of "Wish You Were Here" and joining it to "Corduroy" by a slash; its encore line holds the same three, some capitals set differently. Neither chronology says what the parentheses or the word riffs mean. Both notes say Jack Irons is officially the band's new drummer now, and that "Act Of Love" was played with Neil Young and without Eddie, whom Five Horizons calls Ed.

The Next Step

Mountain View, 104 days earlier, is told in Piano on Black at Shoreline. Both chronologies head the following night, January 15, at the same hall; it is told in L7 on Rockin' in the Free World.

What the Record Preserves

The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line naming the night. Sixteen objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page: images whose markup titles read Voters For Choice - Poster - 1995 and Voters For Choice - Ad - 1995, both hanging under the next night's heading too; three untitled PDFs whose file names carry review, review2 and votersforchoice, each with an untitled image named the same; an image titled Ticket; five images whose markup titles name the band or its members, each before a credit; and two untitled links into its remaster series. The house holds four text files for the night: in each of two folders, the same remaster series information file and fingerprint list, byte for byte. The information file opens with three lines naming the band, the date and Constitution Hall with its city. Its seventeen numbered labels fall into two groups: thirteen that follow the chronologies' songs in their order, with no label for "Wish You Were Here," then a label for the encore break before "Blood," "Indifference" and "Act of Love," which names Neil Young in a parenthesis. The fingerprint list gives one line to each of seventeen FLAC files, numbered 01 to 17 and following the labels. Washington on January 14 comes down to one hall named two ways, two attendance figures, two bill lines that part over Crazy Horse and Lisa Germano, one order of songs with "Wish You Were Here" set two ways, notes that agree on the drummer and on "Act Of Love," sixteen objects and an information file and fingerprint list kept in two folders.
