Some Words in Japanese at the Budokan
The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note says "Elderly Woman" stood on the setlist and went unplayed, and Five Horizons' calls the piece after "Black" very pretty and a complete song. The house's information file builds its recording from two sources, one for each channel.

On Monday, February 20, 1995, Pearl Jam played in Tokyo, at the venue the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as the Nippon Budokan and Five Horizons as the Budokan. Five Horizons prints an attendance of 12,000, where the chronology prints no attendance line, and neither chronology's entry names an opening or support act. Both chronologies' lists run from "Release" to "Indifference," the chronology's over twenty-four entries in a set and two encores and Five Horizons' over twenty-two in a set and one encore line. Both notes tie the tag on "Daughter," or the improv after it, to a Cheap Trick tune, and both say that Eddie, whom Five Horizons calls Ed, spoke some words in Japanese before "Blood" that pleased the crowd.
The show
The Budokan
Five Horizons brackets 111m after its heading without stating what it measures, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's heading carries no figure. Five Horizons' attendance line reads 12,000, a figure the chronology does not print, and neither chronology's entry prints a capacity, a show time or a ticket price.
The Performance
The chronology's setlist runs seventeen entries: "Release," "Last Exit," "Spin The Black Circle," "Tremor Christ," "Corduroy," "Lukin," "Even Flow," "Glorified G," "Daughter," joined by slashes to two labels, then "Whipping," "Immortality," "Alive," "Satan's Bed," an Improv, "Go," "Animal" and "Porch." Its first encore line holds "Rearviewmirror," "Black," Improv, "Jeremy" and "Blood," and its second "Yellow Ledbetter" and "Indifference." Five Horizons' set line gives the same songs in the same order with the same two labels on "Daughter," but it joins "Immortality" to "Alive" by a slash and has no Improv between "Satan's Bed" and "Go," so it runs to fifteen entries. Its one encore line holds the chronology's seven encore entries in the same order, the third written as Improv joined by a slash to Cover?, with Five Horizons' own question mark, and followed by a label in parentheses. Counted item by item, the chronology's fields give twenty-four entries and Five Horizons' twenty-two. The chronology's note says the tag in "Daughter" that night was an altered version of Cheap Trick's "I Want You To Want Me," and Five Horizons' note says the same of the improv after "Daughter," writing the title "I Want You to Want Me." Both notes say that before "Blood" Eddie, whom Five Horizons calls Ed, spoke some words in Japanese that pleased the crowd. The chronology's note adds that "Elderly Woman" stood on the setlist and went unplayed. Five Horizons' note calls the piece after "Black" very pretty and a complete song.
The Next Step
Sendai, two days earlier, is told in An Extended Black in Sendai. Both chronologies head the following night, February 21, in Osaka; it is told in A Snippet of Catholic Boy in Osaka.
Recording & sound
What the Record Preserves
The chronology ends its entry with a remaster series line naming the band, the date and Tokyo, and Five Horizons ends its own with a line reading setlist scan, which it does not explain. The chronology's page hangs five objects under the night's heading: images whose markup titles read Ad and Setlist, one whose title names Eddie Vedder and credits a photographer, and two untitled links into the remaster series. The house holds four text files for the night, in two folders that carry the same pair: an information file of the remaster series and its fingerprint list. The information file opens with the band, the date and Budokan, Tokyo, Japan, and names two sources, one that starts from a microphone and ends on CD-R, the other beginning with a question mark and, the file says, likely a boot CD made from a DAT recording. Its mix takes the left channel from the first source and the right from the second, with glitches patched. Its notes say volume fluctuations were smoothed, the sound was equalized for tonal balance, the second source's speed was corrected by less than 0.01% to line up with the first, loud claps were removed and the volume was raised. Its twenty-three numbered labels fall in three groups that follow the chronology's set and two encores, less the Improv between "Satan's Bed" and "Go," and the fingerprint list names twenty-three FLAC files in the same order. February 20 in Tokyo, in these documents, is the Budokan named two ways, an attendance of 12,000 that of the two chronologies only Five Horizons prints, one run of songs counted as twenty-four entries and as twenty-two, a tag that both notes tie to Cheap Trick, some words in Japanese that both notes report, five objects and a house recording mixed from two sources.
