A Snippet of Catholic Boy in Osaka

· Koseinenkin Kaikan · Osaka

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note says "Catholic Boy," worked into "Porch" as a snippet, came out in 1995 on the film The Basketball Diaries' soundtrack, in a version on which Pearl Jam backed Jim Carroll. Both notes also tell of sorrow over the earthquake, voiced again that night, and of Eddie speaking kindly of Japan.

On Tuesday, February 21, 1995, Pearl Jam played in Osaka, at the hall the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as the Osaka Kōsei Nenkin Kaikan and Five Horizons as the Kosei Nenkin Kaikan. Neither chronology prints an attendance or names an opening or support act. The chronology's setlist runs seventeen entries from "Release" to "Porch," its first encore five from "Satan's Bed" to "Rearviewmirror," and its second holds "Indifference." Both notes call it a good show although Eddie, whom Five Horizons calls Ed, had what they call an upset stomach, and both name this show as the first at which "I Got Id" was played.

The show

Kōsei Nenkin Kaikan

Five Horizons brackets 110m after its heading without stating what it measures, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's heading carries no figure. The chronology writes the hall's name with Osaka before it and a macron over the o of Kōsei, and Five Horizons writes Kosei Nenkin Kaikan without either. Neither chronology's entry prints a capacity, a show time or a ticket price.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs seventeen entries: "Release," "Go," "Last Exit," "Tremor Christ," "Corduroy," "Lukin," "Even Flow," "Glorified G," "Daughter," joined by a slash to "Stuff And Nonsense" in parentheses, "Alive," "I Got Id," "Whipping," "Jeremy," "Animal," "Blood," an Improv and "Porch," joined by a slash to "Catholic Boy." Its first encore holds "Satan's Bed," "Spin The Black Circle," "Sonic Reducer," "Footsteps" and "Rearviewmirror," and its second "Indifference," twenty-three entries in all. Both notes name this as the first show at which "I Got Id" was played. The chronology's note says a snippet of "Catholic Boy" was worked into "Porch," and that the song, in a version on which Pearl Jam backed Jim Carroll, came out in 1995 on the film The Basketball Diaries' soundtrack; Five Horizons' note also mentions a snippet in "Porch." Both notes call it a good show despite what they call an upset stomach on Eddie's part. Both notes say that sorrow over the earthquake was voiced again and that Eddie spoke kindly of Japan.

The Next Step

Tokyo, the night before, is told in Some Words in Japanese at the Budokan. Taipei, three days later, is told in A Silk Blanket in Taipei.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The chronology ends its entry with a remaster series line naming the band, the date and Osaka. Its page hangs two objects under the night's heading, both untitled links into the remaster series. The house holds four text files for the night, an information file of the remaster series and its fingerprint list in each of two folders, the second pair a copy of the first. The information file opens with the band and the date, and its source line starts from Sonic Studios and ends in FLAC files. Its notes say volume fluctuations were smoothed, the sound was equalized for tonal balance, the volume was raised and many claps were removed. Its twenty-six numbered labels fall in three groups that follow the chronology's set and two encores, opening with an Intro and marking both encore breaks, and its "Daughter" and "Porch" have nothing joined to them, where the chronology joins "Stuff And Nonsense" and "Catholic Boy" to them; the fingerprint list follows the same twenty-six. February 21 in Osaka, in these documents, is a hall named two ways, no attendance or opening act in either chronology, twenty-three entries on the chronology's lists, a first "I Got Id" by both notes' account, a snippet of "Catholic Boy" in "Porch" by the chronology's, two objects and a house recording labelled in twenty-six parts.
