A Silk Blanket in Taipei

· Taipei International Convention Center · Taipei

Both notes open the night with the singer carried onto the stage in a silk blanket, and both say that for the encore a woman came out with the band to explain that he was still feeling ill. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note adds that "Lukin" was played with Matt Lukin of Mudhoney.

On Friday, February 24, 1995, Pearl Jam played in Taipei, at the venue Five Horizons heads as TICC and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology as the Taipei International Convention Center. Five Horizons' attendance line reads 3,000 and the chronology's entry has none, and both name Mudhoney, the chronology on its opening act line and Five Horizons on its support act line. The chronology lists fifteen songs from "Last Exit" to "Porch" and an encore of seven that closes with "Yellow Ledbetter," while Five Horizons' set field stops after "Last Exit" and an ellipsis. Both notes tell of an unusual start, with the singer brought out in a silk blanket, and of a woman who came onstage with the band for the encore and explained that the singer was still feeling ill.

The show

TICC or the Convention Center

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's heading names the Taipei International Convention Center in Taipei, Taiwan, and Five Horizons' heading, dated 02/24/95, gives TICC in the same city and country. Neither heading brackets a figure, and neither chronology's entry prints a capacity, a door or stage time, a ticket price, a promoter or how the tickets were sold. Five Horizons' attendance line reads 3,000, and the chronology prints no attendance line for the night. Both name Mudhoney as the other act, the chronology on its opening act line and Five Horizons on its support act line. Both notes say security was very strict with a crowd they call extremely excited.

The Performance

Both notes describe an unusual start: the singer, Eddie in the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology and Ed in Five Horizons, was carried onto the stage in a silk blanket and emerged in a fly mask. The chronology's setlist runs fifteen entries: "Last Exit," "Spin The Black Circle," "Tremor Christ," "Corduroy," "Not For You," "Lukin," "Animal," "Daughter," "Jeremy," "Whipping," "I Got Id," "Alive," "Go," "Blood" and "Porch." Its encore line holds seven more, "Footsteps," "Even Flow," "Satan's Bed," "Rearviewmirror," an entry it spells "Immortaility," "Indifference" and "Yellow Ledbetter," so that its two fields give twenty-two entries. Five Horizons' set field gives "Last Exit" and then an ellipsis, it prints no encore line, and its note says that little is known of that set. The chronology's note says "Lukin" was played with Matt Lukin of Mudhoney, that the setlist it mentions lists it under a name of two words, and that another two-word name on it is probably "I Got Id." Both notes say that for the encore a woman came onstage with the band and, translating, explained that the singer was still feeling ill.

The Next Step

Osaka, three days earlier, is told in A Snippet of Catholic Boy in Osaka. Both chronologies head February 26, two days later, at the Folk Arts Theater in Manila; that night is told in A Furious Satan's Bed in Manila.

What the Record Preserves

No object hangs with the night's entry on the chronology's page, and the house holds no text file for the night. Taipei comes down to one venue named two ways, an attendance that Five Horizons prints and the chronology does not, Mudhoney on both bill lines, twenty-two entries in the chronology against "Last Exit" and an ellipsis in Five Horizons, notes that agree on the silk blanket, the fly mask, the strict security and the woman at the encore, no object under the date and no house file.
