A Furious Satan's Bed in Manila

· Folk Arts Theater · Manila

Both notes tell how a fan got onto the stage in "Even Flow" and fell, pulling the singer down onto him, how security guards with billy clubs then fought the bouncers, and how the band came back for "Satan's Bed" with the amplifiers raised while, as they put it, a large crowd rioted outside. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology, and not Five Horizons, adds fans without tickets who tried to climb the theater's walls, and police who held them back with batons and tear gas.

On Sunday, February 26, 1995, Pearl Jam played the Folk Arts Theater in Manila, which both chronologies name alike. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's attendance line reads 9 000 (sold out) and Five Horizons prints none, and both name Mudhoney, the chronology as its opening act and Five Horizons as its support act. The chronology's set and two encores run to twenty-five entries against Five Horizons' twenty-two: Five Horizons lists no Improv after "Jeremy," and its fields do not name "Porch" or "Blood," which close the chronology's set. Both notes tell of a fan who reached the stage during the "Even Flow" solo and, when he fell, took the singer down with him, of a fight between security guards and bouncers, and of a furious "Satan's Bed" played while, in their word, a large crowd rioted outside.

The show

Outside the Folk Arts Theater

Both chronologies head the night at the Folk Arts Theater in Manila, Philippines, and Five Horizons brackets 105m after its heading without stating what it measures. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's attendance line reads 9 000 (sold out), and Five Horizons prints no attendance line for the night. Both name Mudhoney, the chronology on its opening act line and Five Horizons on its support act line. Neither chronology's entry prints a capacity, a door or stage time, a ticket price or a promoter. Of the two chronologies, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note tells of thousands of fans without tickets who tried to climb the theater's walls, which it puts at 20 feet, and of police keeping them back with batons and tear gas; from the stage, it says, Eddie meanwhile tried to bring back order.

The Performance

Both chronologies print a soundcheck of three entries, the chronology's Improv, "Better Man" and "Hunger Strike" and Five Horizons' improv, "Better Man" jam and "Hungerstrike" jam. The chronology's setlist runs nineteen entries: "Release," "Last Exit," "Spin The Black Circle," "Tremor Christ," "Corduroy," "Not For You," "Even Flow," "Glorified G," "Daughter," with "Stuff And Nonsense" and "W.M.A." joined to it by slashes, each in parentheses, "Why Go," "Deep," "Jeremy," an Improv, "Lukin," "Whipping," "Immortality," "Alive," "Porch" and "Blood." Its first encore runs "Satan's Bed," "Rearviewmirror," "Better Man," "Black" and "Let My Love Open The Door," and its second holds "Indifference," twenty-five entries in all. Five Horizons' set field, over three lines, gives sixteen entries from "Release" to "Alive," with "Stuff and Nonsense" in parentheses and a one-word label of its own joined to "Daughter," and its encore field, over two lines, gives the six songs of the chronology's two encores in the same order, twenty-two entries in all. The two part in two places: the chronology has an Improv between "Jeremy" and "Lukin" where Five Horizons has none, and it ends the set with "Alive," "Porch" and "Blood," where Five Horizons ends it with "Alive" and does not name "Porch" or "Blood" for the night. Both notes say that during the "Even Flow" solo a fan made it onto the stage and held on to the singer's hand while bouncers pulled the fan to one side, and that the fan then fell, pulling the singer down onto him. Both say the singer got up in time to sing again after Mike's solo. Both notes then tell of a fight between the security guards, their billy clubs out, and the bouncers, who they say were protecting the fan. Both say the band came back to the stage and tore into a furious "Satan's Bed" with the amplifiers raised a few notches, while, in their word, a large crowd rioted outside. Every few songs, both notes say, water was thrown over the people at the front, and everyone was sweating; the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology names Eddie as the one who threw it.

The Next Step

Taipei, two days earlier, is told in A Silk Blanket in Taipei. Both chronologies head February 28, two days later, in Bangkok, Thailand; it is told in Act of Love in Bangkok.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

Four objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page, images whose markup titles read Ticket, Setlist, Encores and Eddie Vedder. The house holds no text file for the night. Manila comes down to one theater named alike, an attendance of 9 000 (sold out) in the chronology and 105m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, Mudhoney on both bill lines, twenty-five entries against twenty-two, notes that share the fan on the stage, the fight, the furious "Satan's Bed" and the water, the chronology's word of police at the walls, four objects under the date and no house file.
