A Hole in the Stage in Singapore

· Indoor Stadium · Singapore

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note says the microphone stand was driven down through the stage midway through the show, and it adds, as Five Horizons' note does, that the band disappeared into the hole after the first set and came back through it for the encore. The house's one text file for the night, an information file, repeats Five Horizons' heading and a shorter form of its note, and it says two songs are missing from its recording.

On Friday, March 3, 1995, Pearl Jam played in Singapore, at the venue the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as the Singapore Indoor Stadium and Five Horizons as The Indoor Stadium. The chronology's attendance line reads 6 000, while Five Horizons prints none; each names Mudhoney as the other act, the chronology as its opening act and Five Horizons as its support act. Across a setlist and two encores, the chronology gives twenty-three entries, and Five Horizons gives twenty-one across its set line and two encore lines. The chronology's note says that announcements over the PA interrupted the show from time to time, and Five Horizons' note says the same. Each note mentions the microphone stand being driven down through the stage, opening a hole, and Mark Arm joining the band for "Sonic Reducer."

The show

Two Names for the Stadium

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology puts the night at the Singapore Indoor Stadium and Five Horizons at The Indoor Stadium, both in Singapore, and Five Horizons brackets 110m after its heading without stating what it measures. Of the two chronologies, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints an attendance line, and it reads 6 000. The chronology's note says that announcements over the PA broke into the show from time to time, warning that it would stop if the crowd went on moshing, and the note puts this down to how extremely strict Singapore is; Five Horizons' note says the same. Neither chronology's entry prints a capacity, a door or stage time, a ticket price, or a promoter.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs eighteen entries: "Release," "Go," "Last Exit," "Spin The Black Circle," "Tremor Christ," "Corduroy," "Not For You," "Lukin," "Even Flow," "Dissident," "Animal," "Deep," "Jeremy," "Rearviewmirror," "Immortality," "Alive," an Improv, and "Blood." Its first encore holds four entries, "Daughter," joined by slashes to two labels, then "Little Wing" in parentheses as its own entry, then "Why Go" and "Porch," and its second holds "Sonic Reducer," twenty-three entries in all. Five Horizons' set line gives seventeen entries, the first sixteen of them the chronology's first sixteen in the same order. Five Horizons' first encore line gives three entries, and its second one, twenty-one in all, against the chronology's twenty-three. The chronology's note says that during the jam in "Porch," Eddie shook hands with people at the front, and Five Horizons' note says the same of Ed. The chronology's note says that midway through the show the microphone stand was driven down through the stage, opening a hole, and Five Horizons' note names Ed as the one who drove it. The chronology's note adds that when the first set ended, the band disappeared into the hole, and that they came back through it for the encore; Five Horizons' note says the same. The chronology's note names Mark Arm as joining Pearl Jam for "Sonic Reducer," and Five Horizons' note names him joining PJ for it. The chronology's note adds that after the show he invited everyone to an event on a small island off Singapore, and Five Horizons' note does too.

The Next Step

Bangkok, three days earlier, is told in Act of Love in Bangkok. Both chronologies head March 6, three days later, in Perth, Australia; it is told in Behind an Amplifier in Perth.

What the Record Preserves

Two objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page, both untitled: a link to a PDF file and an image file of the same name. The house holds one text file for the night, an information file. The file's first line repeats Five Horizons' heading for the night, including the 110m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures. The file's note, three lines in the form of Five Horizons' own but shorter, tells of the announcements over the PA, of the hole in the stage, naming Ed, and of Mark Arm on "Sonic Reducer," one source with Five Horizons. The file's twenty numbered labels follow the chronology's first sixteen setlist entries in order and then run four more, ending with "Why Go." The file says, measuring against the setlist and information it refers to, that two songs are missing from its recording, and it names them in parentheses as "Porch" and "Sonic Reducer," a claim about the recording, not the concert. The file names no source, lineage, or length for the recording, and neither chronology's entry prints a recording line for the night. March 3 in Singapore comes down to one stadium under two names, an attendance line that of the two chronologies only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints, Mudhoney on both bill lines, twenty-three entries against twenty-one, notes that share the announcements over the PA, the handshakes in "Porch," the hole in the stage and Mark Arm on "Sonic Reducer," two untitled objects, and one house file that repeats Five Horizons' heading and, in shorter form, its note.
