Behind an Amplifier in Perth

· Entertainment Centre · Perth

Before the show began, the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note says, Eddie came out and hid behind an amplifier, where everyone could see him. Five Horizons opens its first encore with "Porch," which closes the chronology's first list, so that the two divide their twenty-five entries differently.

On Monday, March 6, 1995, Pearl Jam played in Perth, Australia, at a venue the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as the Perth Entertainment Centre and Five Horizons as the Entertainment Center. The chronology's attendance line reads 9 000 (sold out), and Five Horizons' reads 9,000; each names The Meanies as the other act, the chronology as its opening act and Five Horizons as its support act. Each chronology gives twenty-five entries: the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology in four lists, the first of them labelled encore, and Five Horizons in a set line and two encore lines. The chronology's note tells of Eddie hiding behind an amplifier before the show, and Five Horizons' note says the last encore was played without Stone.

The show

Centre or Center

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology names the venue the Perth Entertainment Centre, and Five Horizons names it the Entertainment Center, in its own spelling and without the city. Five Horizons brackets 115m after its heading without stating what it measures. The two attendance lines give the same number, 9 000 (sold out) in the chronology and 9,000 in Five Horizons, and of the two chronologies only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology marks the night sold out. Neither chronology's entry prints a capacity, a door or stage time, a ticket price, or a promoter.

The Performance

The chronology prints no setlist line for the night: its first list carries the label encore and runs nineteen entries, "Oceans," "Go," "Last Exit," "Spin The Black Circle," "Tremor Christ," "Animal," "Corduroy," "Not For You," "Lukin," an Improv, then "Even Flow," "Dissident," "Why Go," "Jeremy," "Whipping," "I Got Id," "Rearviewmirror," "Blood," and "Porch." The list labelled encore 1 holds "Satan's Bed," then "Daughter," joined by slashes to a label and then to "Little Wing" in parentheses, and then "Black." The chronology's encore 2 holds "Better Man" and "Let My Love Open The Door," and its encore 3 "Yellow Ledbetter," for twenty-five entries across four lists. Five Horizons' set line runs over three lines to eighteen entries, from "Oceans" to "Blood." Where the chronology's tenth entry is an Improv, Five Horizons prints Untitled. Five Horizons' two encore lines give six entries and one, twenty-five in all. The two divide the night differently: the chronology closes its first list with "Porch" and puts "Better Man" and "Let My Love Open The Door" in its encore 2, while Five Horizons opens its first encore with "Porch" and closes that encore with the same two songs. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note says that before the show began, Eddie came out and hid behind an amplifier, where everyone could see him. Five Horizons' note says the last encore, "Yellow Ledbetter," was played without Stone.

The Next Step

Singapore, three days earlier, is told in A Hole in the Stage in Singapore. Both chronologies head March 8, two days later, in Adelaide, Australia; it is told in A Tennis Ball in Adelaide.

What the Record Preserves

Three objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology's page: an image whose markup title is Setlist, an untitled link to a PDF file, and an untitled image file of the same name. The house holds no text file for the night. March 6 in Perth comes down to one venue under two spellings, 9 000 (sold out) on the chronology's attendance line and 9,000 on Five Horizons', The Meanies on both bill lines, twenty-five entries in four lists against three, an Improv against Untitled, Eddie behind an amplifier by the chronology's account and a last encore without Stone by Five Horizons', three objects under the date, and no house file.
