Hot Tea at Eastern Creek

· Eastern Creek Raceway · Sydney

With throat problems, the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note says, Eddie sipped hot tea and told the crowd the band would not play until the crowd had some water. The chronology lists 42 000 (sold out), compared with Five Horizons' 41,000.

On Saturday, March 11, 1995, Pearl Jam played in Sydney, Australia, at a venue that the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as Eastern Creek and Five Horizons as Eastern Creek Raceway. The chronology's attendance line reads 42 000 (sold out), and Five Horizons' reads 41,000, and the chronology names two opening acts, The Meanies and Cosmic Psychos, whereas Five Horizons names one support act, The Meanies. The chronology prints a pre-set line of one song followed by twenty-five entries across a setlist and two encores, and Five Horizons prints twenty-four entries on a single set line. The chronology's note tells of Eddie playing "Throw Your Arms Around Me" on his own in a wig before The Meanies' set, of his throat problems and the hot tea he sipped, and of Link Meanie, The Meanies' singer, joining the band on "Rockin' In The Free World."

The show

At Eastern Creek

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology names the venue Eastern Creek, and Five Horizons names it Eastern Creek Raceway. Five Horizons brackets 130m after its heading without stating what it measures. The two attendance lines differ: 42 000 (sold out) in the chronology and 41,000 in Five Horizons, and of the two chronologies, only the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology marks the night sold out. Neither chronology's entry prints a capacity, a door or stage time, a ticket price, or a promoter.

The Performance

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints a pre-set line holding one song, "Throw Your Arms Around Me," which it marks as Eddie solo, and Five Horizons prints no pre-set line. Both chronologies print a soundcheck line naming "Dissident" and "Glorified G." The chronology's setlist runs seventeen entries: "Last Exit," "Animal," "Spin The Black Circle," "Even Flow," "Corduroy," "Not For You," "Elderly Woman," which it follows with three dots, "Go," "Jeremy," "Why Go," "State Of Love And Trust," "Daughter," joined by a slash to a label, then "Whipping," "I Got Id," "Rearviewmirror," "Alive," and "Blood." Its first encore runs "Black," "Satan's Bed," an Improv, "Better Man," "Immortality," and "Porch," and its second holds "Indifference" and "Rockin' In The Free World," twenty-five entries after the pre-set's one. Five Horizons prints no encore line: its single set line runs twenty-four entries, from "Last Exit" to "Rockin' in the Free World." The chronology's note says that Eddie, wearing a wig, played "Throw Your Arms Around Me" on his own before The Meanies' set. It says he had throat problems and sipped hot tea, and that he told the crowd the band wouldn't play until the crowd had some water. The note names Link Meanie, The Meanies' singer, as a guest on "Rockin' In The Free World."

The Next Step

The Entertainment Centre in Sydney, the night before, is told in A Birthday Cake for Jeff in Sydney. Both chronologies head March 14, three days later, at Exhibition Park in Canberra, Australia; it is told in Something Fairly Local in Canberra.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

Five objects hang with the night's entry on the chronology page: images whose markup titles read Setlist, Ticket, and Eddie Vedder; an untitled link to a PDF file; and an untitled image file with the same name. The house holds one text file for the night, an information file. The file's first line repeats Five Horizons' heading for the night word for word, including the 130m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures. The file's track list runs twenty-five numbered lines, from "Last Exit" to "Rockin' In The Free World." The file calls its recording complete when set against the setlist and information, a claim about the recording, not the concert. The file gives no source, lineage, or length for its recording, and neither chronology's entry prints a recording line for the night. March 11 at Eastern Creek comes down to one venue named two ways, 42 000 (sold out) against 41,000, two opening acts against one support act, a pre-set and twenty-five entries against twenty-four on one set line, a solo in a wig, hot tea and a guest singer by the chronology's account, five objects under the date, and one house file whose first line repeats Five Horizons' heading.
