An Old Bike at Red Rocks

· Red Rocks · Morrison

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note says that Eddie arrived on stage riding an old bike, and Five Horizons' note tells the same of Ed. The chronology's note names three songs it says were written on the setlist it mentions but not performed, and the chronology's page hangs thirty objects under the date.

On Monday, June 19, 1995, Pearl Jam played at Red Rocks in Morrison, and both chronologies name Bad Religion on the night's bill, the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology on its opening act line and Five Horizons on its support act line. The chronology's attendance line reads 9 000 with a sold-out mark, and Five Horizons' reads 9,000 with none. The chronology's setlist runs eighteen entries from "Go" to "Porch," and its encore three more, twenty-one in all, where Five Horizons' set and encore lines give twenty. Both notes say that "Habit" was played by the whole band for the first time and that "Leaving Here" had its premiere that night.

The show

Red Rocks, Spelled Two Ways

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads the venue as the Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Five Horizons as the Red Rocks Amphitheater, and the house's information file for the night gives Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO, on its third line. Five Horizons brackets 120m after its heading without stating what it measures, and the chronology's heading carries no figure. Neither chronology's entry names a promoter or gives a capacity, door or stage times, or a ticket price.

The Performance

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's setlist runs eighteen entries: "Go," "Last Exit," "Spin The Black Circle," "Animal," "Corduroy," "Not For You," "Dissident," "Even Flow," "Jeremy," "Habit," "I Got Id," "Glorified G," "Daughter," "Black," "Rearviewmirror," "Immortality," "Alive," and "Porch." Its encore line adds "Leaving Here," "Better Man," and "Yellow Ledbetter," for twenty-one entries in all. Five Horizons' set line gives seventeen entries, and its encore line gives the same three as the chronology's, twenty in all. The chronology's note says that Eddie arrived on stage riding an old bike, and Five Horizons' note says the same of Ed. Both notes say that the whole band played "Habit" for the first time, adding that Eddie had played it by himself on the Mike Watt tour. Both notes say that "Leaving Here" had its premiere at the show, the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology calling it an Eddie Holland song and Five Horizons a High Numbers song. The chronology's note also names three songs, "Blood," "Whipping," and "State Of Love And Trust," that it says were written on the setlist it mentions but not performed.

The Next Step

Casper, three days earlier, at the Casper Events Center, is told in Long Road Premiered in Casper. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, June 20, at the same venue in Morrison; it is told in Six Songs Seated at Red Rocks.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The chronology closes its entry with a remaster series line, marked new, that names the band, the date, Denver, and v2, followed by the labels aud A and info-file. That line says Denver where the chronology's heading says Morrison. Five Horizons' entry ends with three short lines that read as link labels: setlist scan, Monkeywrench, and Radio link. Thirty objects hang under the night's heading on the chronology's page: an image whose markup title reads Setlist, twenty-three images whose markup titles name Pearl Jam or one or more of Eddie Vedder, Jack Irons, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, and Mike McCready, two untitled links to PDF files, two untitled images, and two untitled links into the remaster series, one to a zip archive and one to a text file. The house holds four text files for the night, in two folders: each folder has the remaster series' information file and its fingerprint list, and the second folder's pair matches the first byte for byte. The information file's first three lines give the band, the date, and the venue with its town and state. The file's source line starts from Sonic Studios equipment and ends in FLAC files, and its lineage line starts and ends in FLAC files. The file's notes list four treatments: smoothing of changes in volume, equalizing for tonal balance, the removal of loud claps, and a boost in volume. The information file's twenty-three numbered labels run an Intro, then eighteen in the order of the chronology's setlist from "Go" to "Porch," then an encore break and "Leaving Here," "Better Man," and "Yellow Ledbetter." The fingerprint list pairs each of twenty-three FLAC file names with a checksum, and its names are the information file's labels. The information file and the fingerprint list name no recordist and give no length for the recording. Taken together, these documents give Red Rocks on June 19 one venue spelled two ways, 120m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, attendance lines of 9 000 and 9,000, Bad Religion on both bill lines, twenty-one entries against twenty, an old bike in both notes, thirty objects under the date, and a house information file of twenty-three labels.
