Six Songs Seated at Red Rocks

· Red Rocks · Morrison

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note says that the band played its first six songs seated, feeling the altitude, and Five Horizons' note says the same. The chronology's page hangs forty-six objects under the date, two of them images whose markup titles read Soundcheck: Pearl Jam.

On Tuesday, June 20, 1995, Pearl Jam played a second night at Red Rocks in Morrison, and both chronologies again name Bad Religion on the bill, the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology on its opening act line and Five Horizons on its support act line. As on June 19, the chronology's attendance line reads 9 000, marked sold out, and Five Horizons' reads 9,000, with no mark. The chronology's setlist runs twenty-three entries from "Long Road" to "Blood," and its two encores add three and one, twenty-seven entries in all, the same total that Five Horizons' set and encore lines give. Both notes give "Ship Song" to Nick Cave, and the chronology's note says that a new, slower "Jeremy" had its premiere at the show.

The show

Red Rocks, the Next Night

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology again heads the venue as the Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Five Horizons as the Red Rocks Amphitheater, and this night's house information file gives Red Rocks Amphitheater, Morrison, CO, on its third line. Five Horizons sets its heading over two lines and brackets 132m on the second without stating what it measures, and the chronology's heading carries no figure. Neither chronology's entry names a promoter or gives a capacity, door or stage times, a ticket price, or the way tickets were sold or handed out.

The Performance

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's setlist runs twenty-three entries: "Long Road," "Jeremy," "Ship Song," "Footsteps," "Falling Down," "Better Man," "Last Exit," "Spin The Black Circle," "Animal," "Tremor Christ," "Corduroy," "Not For You," "Go," "State Of Love And Trust," "Daughter," "Garden," "I've Just Seen A Face," which it prints in parentheses and follows with the words Eddie solo, also in parentheses, "Alive," "Whipping," "Lukin," "Rearviewmirror," "Elderly Woman," which it follows with three dots, and "Blood." Its first encore holds "Black," "Porch," and "Immortality," and its second "Indifference," for twenty-seven entries across the three lines. Five Horizons' set field gives twenty-three entries in the chronology's order, and its two encore lines give the same four, twenty-seven in all. The chronology's note says that the band played the first six songs seated, feeling the altitude and trying something different from the previous night, and Five Horizons' note says the same. The chronology's note says that the band tired of sitting and got rid of the chairs on going into "Last Exit," and Five Horizons' note tells of frustration at being seated. The chronology's note says that a new, slower "Jeremy" had its premiere at the show, Five Horizons marks "Jeremy" new in its set field, and the house's information file marks its third label the same way. Both notes give "Ship Song" to Nick Cave. The chronology's note calls "I've Just Seen A Face" an impromptu Beatles song that Eddie sang a cappella, and the house's information file labels its eighteenth track as a tease of it. The same note says that "Rearviewmirror" was stopped so that a fight could be broken up, and that the band then took the song up again from where it had stopped.

The Next Step

Morrison, the night before, at the same venue, is told in An Old Bike at Red Rocks. Both chronologies head June 22, two days later, in Sacramento; it is told in What the Audience Threw in Sacramento.

What the Record Preserves

The chronology closes its entry with a remaster series line that names the band, the date, and Denver, followed by the label info-file. As on the night before, that line says Denver where the chronology's heading says Morrison. Forty-six objects hang under the night's heading on the chronology's page: two images whose markup titles read Setlist and Ticket, forty-two images whose markup titles name Pearl Jam or one or more of Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, and Mike McCready, two of them reading Soundcheck: Pearl Jam, and two untitled links into the remaster series, one to a zip archive and one to a text file. The house holds four text files for this night as well, in two folders: each folder has the remaster series' information file and its fingerprint list, and the second folder's pair matches the first byte for byte. The information file's first three lines give the band, the date, and the venue with its town and state. The file's source entry draws on three sources and ends in CDR, and its lineage line starts and ends in FLAC files. The file's notes speak of equalizing for tonal balance and of a boost in volume. The information file's thirty numbered labels run an Intro, then twenty-three in the order of the chronology's setlist from "Long Road" to "Blood," then an encore break and three more, and a second encore break and "Indifference." The fingerprint list pairs each of thirty FLAC file names with a checksum, and its names follow the information file's labels, except that the twenty-third gives "Elderly Woman" where the information file's label runs longer. The information file and the fingerprint list name no recordist and give no length for the recording. Taken together, these documents give Red Rocks on June 20 the same venue spelled two ways, 132m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, attendance lines of 9 000 and 9,000 again, twenty-seven entries in each chronology, the first six songs played seated in both notes, forty-six objects under the date, and a house information file of thirty labels.
