What the Audience Threw in Sacramento

· Cal Expo · Sacramento

Five Horizons' note says the date was first booked elsewhere, and Five Horizons' set line marks "Jeremy" as new. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's page hangs five objects under the date: two images whose markup titles read Setlist, one whose markup title reads Ticket, and two whose markup titles name Eddie Vedder and, on one of them, Stone Gossard.

On Thursday, June 22, 1995, Pearl Jam played at Cal Expo in Sacramento, California. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology gives an attendance of 14 400 and marks the night sold out, and Five Horizons gives 10,000 with no status. Both name Bad Religion, the chronology as opening act and Five Horizons as support act. The chronology's setlist runs twenty entries from "Release" to "Blood," and its encore four more, from "Better Man" to "Yellow Ledbetter," twenty-four in all. Five Horizons' set and encore lines give twenty and four entries in the chronology's order. Both notes say the audience threw a good deal onto the stage, shoes and shirts among it.

The show

Amphitheatre or Amphitheater

The two chronologies write the venue two ways, the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology as Cal Expo Amphitheatre and Five Horizons as Cal Expo Amphitheater, and both place it in Sacramento, California. Five Horizons brackets 115m after its heading without stating what it measures, and the chronology's heading carries no figure. Five Horizons' note opens by saying that the date was first booked elsewhere. Neither chronology's entry gives a capacity, a door or stage time, a ticket price, a promoter, or the way tickets were sold.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs "Release," "Last Exit," "Spin The Black Circle," "Animal," "Tremor Christ," "Jeremy," "Corduroy," "Lukin," "Not for You," "Dissident," "Go," "Even Flow," "Daughter," "Rearviewmirror," "Habit," "Immortality," "Whipping," "Black," "Alive," and "Blood." Its encore line holds "Better Man," "Sonic Reducer," "Porch," and "Yellow Ledbetter." Five Horizons' set line gives twenty entries in the chronology's order and marks "Jeremy" as new, and its encore line gives the same four songs. Both notes describe the audience throwing a good deal onto the stage, giving shoes and shirts as examples.

The Next Step

Morrison, two nights before, is told in Six Songs Seated at Red Rocks. Both chronologies put the next show two nights later, on June 24, in San Francisco; it is told in Neil Young in Golden Gate Park.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The chronology's entry has no remaster series line, and Five Horizons' entry closes with three lines that read as links: a setlist scan, Monkeywrench, and a radio link. Five objects hang under the night's heading on the chronology's page: two images whose markup titles read Setlist, one whose markup title reads Ticket, one whose markup title reads Eddie Vedder, and one whose markup title reads Eddie Vedder & Stone Gossard. Sacramento comes down, in these documents, to one venue spelled two ways, 115m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 14 400 in the chronology and 10,000 in Five Horizons, Bad Religion on both bill lines, twenty-four set entries that both chronologies print in one order, a "Jeremy" that Five Horizons marks as new, an earlier booking in Five Horizons' note, what the audience threw in both notes, and five objects under the date.
