Neil Young in Golden Gate Park

· Polo Field · San Francisco

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note says the show sold out in 21 minutes and that some 30 000 fans later asked for their money back. The chronology's second setlist field separates "Hey Hey" and "My My" with a comma, where Five Horizons prints "Hey Hey My My" as one entry.

On Saturday, June 24, 1995, Pearl Jam played in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology gives an attendance of 54 000 and marks the show sold out, and Five Horizons gives 53,440 with no status. The two chronologies print the bill differently: the chronology's opening acts line names Bad Religion, then Crash and Britany, and Five Horizons' support act line names Crash and Brittany, then Bad Religion. The chronology prints the night in three fields: a setlist of seven entries from "Last Exit" to "Not For You," a second setlist field that it labels Neil Jam, with thirteen items from "Big Green Country" to "Cortez The Killer," and an encore field of two under the same label. Five Horizons gives the same seven on a first set line, twelve entries on a second, and two on an encore line. The chronology's note says Neil Young came on once "Not For You" was over and Eddie had left the stage, and Five Horizons' note says Ed left after seven songs and Neil came on.

The show

Field or Fields

The two chronologies write the venue two ways, the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology as the Polo Field at Golden Gate Park and Five Horizons as Golden Gate Park: Polo Fields, and the house's text file opens with Five Horizons' form. Five Horizons brackets 140m after its heading without stating what it measures, and the house's text file, in the same heading form, brackets 170m in its place, likewise without stating what it measures; the chronology's heading carries no figure. The chronology gives an attendance of 54 000 with the show marked sold out, Five Horizons gives 53,440 with no status, and the house's text file also prints 53,440. The chronology's note says the show sold out in 21 minutes. Neither chronology's entry gives a capacity, a door or stage time, a ticket price, a promoter, or the way tickets were sold.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs "Last Exit," "Spin The Black Circle," "Go," "Animal," "Tremor Christ," "Corduroy," and "Not For You." Its second field, which it labels Neil Jam, lists "Big Green Country," "Act Of Love," "Throw Your Hatred Down," "Powderfinger," "Truth Be Known," "Rockin' In The Free World," "The Needle And The Damage Done," "Hey Hey" and "My My," which it divides with a comma, "I'm The Ocean," "Down By The River," "Downtown," and "Cortez The Killer," thirteen items as the chronology separates them. Its encore field, under the same label, holds "Peace And Love" and "Rockin' In The Free World," which the second field also lists. Five Horizons sets the same seven entries on a first set line, then gives twelve entries on a second set line, in the order of the chronology's second field, printing "Hey Hey My My" as one. Its encore line holds "Peace and Love" and "Rockin' in the Free World." The chronology's note says that once "Not For You" was over, an exhausted Eddie left the stage; Five Horizons' note says that after seven songs Ed left the stage ill, and the house's text file says the same in Five Horizons' words. The chronology's note says Neil Young then came on and calls the premiere of Mirror Ball that followed impressive; Five Horizons' note and the house's text file each say Neil came on and tell of a Mirrorball premiere. Five Horizons' note says the crowd behaved poorly. The chronology's note says that near the end Jeff apologized for how things had turned out and said the band would try to return, while fans booed. It gives figures for what came after: some 30 000 fans asked for their money back and 20 000 others did not, and it connects those 20 000 with tickets for a Spartan Stadium show in San Jose, California, dated November 4, 1995.

What the Record Preserves

The chronology's entry carries no remaster series line. Eighteen objects hang under the night's heading on the chronology's page. Four of them are images whose markup titles read Poster, Map, Parking ticket, and Ticket, two are images whose markup titles read Ad, and one is an image that its markup title calls a pass. Six more have markup titles that read Eddie Vedder on two, Eddie Vedder & Stone Gossard on two, Mike McCready on one, and Neil Young & Stone Gossard on one. Four have markup titles that begin with Neil Jam and then name Neil Young with Stone Gossard on one, Jeff Ament and Jack Irons with Neil Young on two, and Neil Young with Mike McCready on one. The last has a markup title that begins with Backstage and names Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, and Mike McCready. The house holds one text file for the night. Under a line reading Setlist, it lists seven titles in Five Horizons' spellings, from "Last Exit" to "Not for You," and no title after them. It names no recording, source, lineage, recordist, or track file. San Francisco comes down, in these documents, to one venue in Golden Gate Park written two ways, 140m that Five Horizons brackets and 170m that the house's text file brackets, each without saying what it measures, an attendance of 54 000 in the chronology and 53,440 in Five Horizons and the house's file, a bill in two orders and spellings, three fields in the chronology and three lines in Five Horizons with thirteen items against twelve in the second, Neil Young coming on in the chronology's note and Neil in Five Horizons', the refunds by the chronology's count, eighteen objects, and one house text file for the night.
