A Heavy Jacket in the Austin Heat

· South Park Meadows · Austin

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note says Eddie came on grinning in a heavy jacket, though it calls the day terribly hot, and that the jacket was gone once "Act Of Love" was over, and Five Horizons' note tells the same of him. Both notes call "Talk About The Passion" in the first encore a surprise, a tease in the chronology's note and a song in Five Horizons'.

On Saturday, September 16, 1995, Pearl Jam played South Park Meadows in Austin, Texas. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology gives an attendance of 27 000 and Five Horizons gives 27,000, each with no status. The chronology's opening act line names Ramones, and Five Horizons' support act line names The Ramones. The chronology prints twenty-two entries in its setlist, seven in a first encore and one in a second, thirty in all, and Five Horizons gives the same counts on its set line and its two encore lines. Both chronologies print a soundcheck of "Rats" and "Jeremy."

The show

South Park Meadows

Both chronologies head the night at South Park Meadows in Austin, TX, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's heading also gives USA after the state. The house's information file gives South Park Meadows, Austin, TX on its third line. Five Horizons brackets 135m after its heading without stating what it measures, and the chronology's heading carries no figure. Neither chronology's entry gives a capacity, a door or stage time, a ticket price, or a promoter.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs "Act Of Love," "Go," "Last Exit," "Long Road," "Animal," "Tremor Christ," "Corduroy," "Jeremy," "Lukin," "Not For You," "Elderly Woman," "Why Go," "Even Flow," "Dissident," "Daughter," "State Of Love And Trust," "Rearviewmirror," "I Got Id," "Immortality," "Black," "Spin The Black Circle," and "Alive." Its first encore holds "Once," "Sonic Reducer," "Leaving Here," "Better Man," "Talk About The Passion," "Whipping," and "Porch," and its second holds "Indifference." Five Horizons' set line gives twenty-two entries from "Act of Love" to "Alive," with "Elderly Woman" without the three dots that follow it in the chronology. Five Horizons' first encore line gives the same seven entries as the chronology's, and its second gives "Indifference." Both notes tell of a person who came on while the Ramones were playing, wearing a dress and a mask and jumping around. When Pearl Jam's set began, both notes say, Eddie came on grinning in a heavy jacket, though they call the day terribly hot, and the jacket was gone as soon as "Act Of Love" was over. Both notes say the show paused briefly once "Last Exit" was over. Both notes call "Talk About The Passion" a surprise in the first encore: a surprise tease in the chronology's note and a surprise song in Five Horizons'. The chronology's note ends by saying the electricity cut out for a time in the middle of "Porch."

The Next Step

The show before, two days earlier at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, is told in A Funky Satan's Bed in Las Cruces. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, September 17, at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans; it is told in Joey Ramone on Sonic Reducer in New Orleans.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line that names the band, the date and Austin and carries the label info-file. Six objects hang under the night's heading on the chronology's page: an image whose markup title reads Ticket, two more images, a link to a PDF file, and two links into the chronology's remaster series, one to a zip file and one to a text file. The house holds five files for the night: an information file whose lines repeat lines of Five Horizons' entry, and the remaster series' information file and its fingerprint list, each in two identical copies. The remaster series' information file opens with three lines naming the band, the date, and South Park Meadows with its city and state. Under its Sources label the file prints three lettered source lines: a) runs from Sonic Studios to FLAC, b) runs from Core Sound Binaurals to SHN, and c) ends with CDR after starting from Audio Technica 825. Two mix lines build the left channel from source a and the right from sources b and c, and add in brackets that for the first track and the second encore the left comes from b and the right from c. The file's notes say every source was equalized for tonal balance and had its fluctuations in volume smoothed, that sources b and c were speed-corrected by less than 0.01% so that they lined up with source a, and were then mixed, and that claps and other glitches were edited out and the volume boosted. The information file's thirty numbered labels give twenty for the set, from "Act of Love" to "Alive," with no label for "Long Road" or "Jeremy"; an Encore Break label then opens the encore's labels, from "Once" to "Porch," with "Talk About the Passion" marked tease, and a second Encore Break label comes before "Indifference." The fingerprint list gives each of thirty FLAC file names a value; its names follow the labels, and its twenty-ninth reads Encore Break 2 where the information file prints Encore Break. The two information files and the fingerprint list name no recordist and give no generation for any source and no length for the recording. Austin on September 16 comes down to one venue named alike in both chronologies, 135m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 27 000 in the chronology and 27,000 in Five Horizons, the Ramones on both bill lines, thirty entries in each chronology, two notes that share Eddie's heavy jacket and the surprise in the first encore, six objects, and five house files.
