Monkeywrench Radio Again in Salt Lake City

· Delta Center · Salt Lake City

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note says Monkeywrench Radio carried Pearl Jam's set on air again, and both notes use the word premiers for "Brain Of J." Where the chronology's note calls what follows "Daughter" a tag in it, Five Horizons' note calls it an improv after the song.

On Thursday, November 2, 1995, Pearl Jam played a second night at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, as both chronologies head it. As on November 1, Five Horizons gives an attendance of 9,000, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's entry prints no attendance line. The bill is the night before's: Fastbacks on the chronology's opening act line, The Fastbacks on Five Horizons' support act line. The chronology prints twenty entries in its setlist and five in its encore, twenty-five in all, and Five Horizons gives the same counts on its set and encore lines.

The show

Another Night at the Delta Center

Both chronologies head the night at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, UT, as they head November 1, the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's heading again adding USA at its end. Five Horizons again brackets 135m after its heading without stating what it measures, and the chronology's heading carries no figure. Neither chronology's entry gives a capacity, a door or stage time, a ticket price, or a promoter.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs "Release," "Even Flow," "Last Exit," "Animal," "Dissident," "Not For You," "Rearviewmirror," "Better Man," "Go," "Glorified G," "Daughter," "Deep," "Jeremy," "Corduroy," "Lukin," "I Got Id," "Brain Of J.," "Black," "State Of Love And Trust," and "Porch." Its encore holds "Sonic Reducer," "Whipping," "Leaving Here," "Immortality," and "Yellow Ledbetter." Five Horizons' set line gives twenty entries in the same order, and its encore line the same five. The chronology's note says Monkeywrench Radio carried Pearl Jam's set on air again, and Five Horizons' note says Monkeywrench Radio carried this show. The chronology's note calls what follows "Daughter" the tag in it, a modified version of a song with Eddie changing the lyrics, while Five Horizons' note calls it the improv after "Daughter," with the lyrics modified. Both notes use the word premiers for "Brain Of J." Both notes say the crowd was not very responsive, and that according to what Eddie said on Monkeywrench Radio, the band had meant to play a little longer, with one more encore, but people left early.

The Next Step

The night before, at the same venue, is told in An Alien Head in Salt Lake City. Both chronologies put the next show two days later, November 4, at Spartan Stadium in San Jose; it is told in Kim Warnick and Ben Harper in San Jose.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line that names the band, the date, and Salt Lake City, with v3 in parentheses, and carries the label info-file. Five Horizons' entry closes with link labels of its page: setlist scan, then Monkeywrench, then Radio link. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs an image whose markup title reads Signed setlist and two untitled links into the chronology's remaster series, one to a zip file and one to a text file. The house holds four files for the night: the remaster series' information file and its fingerprint list, each in two identical copies. The information file opens with four lines that name the band, the date, the Delta Center, and Salt Lake City with its state. Its source line closes with a parenthesis that ends with the words Monkeywrench FM broadcast. The file's notes line, its own statement about the processing, says the two channels were given different EQ to create a stereo separation, bass and treble in the left channel so that Mike's lead guitar and Jeff's bass stand out and the mid range in the right so that Stone's guitar does. The same line calls the file the 3rd version, with a glitch fixed where "Rearviewmirror" ends. The information file's twenty-seven numbered labels, each number followed by a hyphen, run from "Release" to "Porch" in the chronology's setlist order, then give Encore Break 1, "Sonic Reducer," "Whipping," "Leaving Here," and "Immortality," then Encore Break 2 and "Yellow Ledbetter." The labels set a second encore break before "Yellow Ledbetter," and each chronology prints one encore field of five entries ending with that song. The fingerprint list gives each of twenty-seven FLAC file names a value, the names being the labels without the hyphens. The information file and the fingerprint list name no recordist and give no length for the recording. Salt Lake City on November 2 comes down to the same venue named alike in both chronologies, 135m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 9,000 that Five Horizons prints, one act under two names, twenty-five entries in each chronology, two notes that differ over a tag in "Daughter" or an improv after it, and four house files.
