Kim Warnick and Ben Harper in San Jose

· Spartan Stadium · San Jose

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note says Ben Harper and, from the Fastbacks, Kim Warnick joined Pearl Jam for "So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star," and both notes say Eddie started the show early with "Dead Man." The chronology's note ends by saying that Monkeywrench Radio carried the set on air.

On Saturday, November 4, 1995, Pearl Jam played in San Jose, California, at Spartan Stadium, which both chronologies name alike. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology gives an attendance of 35 000 and marks the show sold out, and Five Horizons gives 35,000 with no status. The chronology's opening acts line names Fastbacks, then Ben Harper, and Five Horizons' support act line names The Fastbacks and Ben Harper. The chronology prints twenty-four entries in its setlist and six in its encore, thirty in all, and Five Horizons gives the same counts on its set and encore lines. The chronology's note opens with a superlative: with 35 000 tickets sold, it says, no event in Spartan Stadium's 62 years had been bigger.

The show

The Stadium in San Jose

Both chronologies head the night at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, CA, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology adds USA to the place. The house's information file gives Spartan Stadium on its third line and San Jose, CA on its fourth. Five Horizons brackets 155m after its heading without stating what it measures, and the chronology's heading carries no figure. Neither chronology's entry gives a capacity, a door or stage time, a ticket price, or a promoter.

The Performance

The chronology's soundcheck line lists "Act Of Love," "I Got Id," and "Red Mosquito," and Five Horizons' soundcheck line lists three entries. The chronology's pre-set line gives "Dead Man" with the words Eddie solo in parentheses, and Five Horizons prints "Dead Man" on a line it labels Ed's pre-set. The chronology's setlist runs "Release," "Even Flow," "Last Exit," "Animal," "Dissident," "Not For You," "Rearviewmirror," "Elderly Woman," which it follows with three dots, "Go," "Glorified G," "Daughter," "Deep," "Jeremy," "Corduroy," "Lukin," "I Got Id," "Spin The Black Circle," "Red Mosquito," "So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star," "Brain Of J.," "Why Go," "Black," "Alive," and "Blood." Its encore holds "Leaving Here," "Better Man," "Immortality," "Porch," "So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star," and "Indifference." Five Horizons' set line gives twenty-four entries in the chronology's order, and its encore line gives the same six in the same order. Both notes say Eddie started the show early with "Dead Man," which the chronology's note calls unreleased and Five Horizons' note calls then unreleased. Both notes say that Eddie, who had long steered clear of antics of this kind, climbed the speaker stacks and the scaffolding during "Porch." Both notes also say that in "Porch" he worked in a bit of a tag, in their word, and repeated one of the tag's lines a few times. The chronology's note says Ben Harper and, from the Fastbacks, Kim Warnick joined Pearl Jam for "So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star," and Five Horizons' note names the same two guests joining the band. The chronology's note ends by saying that Monkeywrench Radio carried the band's set on air. The chronology's note says that Eddie had had to leave an earlier show with a stomach flu.

The Next Step

The Delta Center in Salt Lake City, two days earlier, is told in Monkeywrench Radio Again in Salt Lake City. Both chronologies put the next show two days later, on November 6, in San Diego; it is told in Long Road Opens the First Encore in San Diego.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line that names the band, the date, San Jose, and v3 in parentheses, and carries the label info-file. Five Horizons' entry ends with short lines that read as link labels of its page, the last two reading Monkeywrench and Radio link. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs ten images. It also hangs four more objects: a link to a PDF file, an image, and two links into the chronology's remaster series, one to a zip file and one to a text file. The house holds four files for the night: the remaster series' information file and its fingerprint list, each in two identical copies. The information file opens with four lines naming the band, the date, the stadium, and its city. FLAC is the last word of its lineage line. Its notes line, the file's own account of how the recording was handled, says that the two stereo channels were each given their own equalization to separate them: work on bass and treble at the left aims at Jeff's bass and at Mike's guitar solos, work on the midrange at the right aims at Stone's guitar, and V3 has less of the low end than V2. Its thirty-two numbered labels open with Intro, follow the chronology's setlist in its order from "Release" to "Blood," giving the ninth as "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town" and the twentieth as a tease of "So You Wanna Be a Rock N' Roll Star," and then, after an Encore Break label, run from "Leaving Here" to "Indifference." The fingerprint list gives each of thirty-two FLAC file names a value, the names repeating the labels without their hyphens, save that the ninth stops at Elderly Woman and two drop an apostrophe. The information file and the fingerprint list name no recordist and give no length for the recording. San Jose on November 4 comes down to one stadium named alike in both chronologies, 155m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 35 000 in the chronology and 35,000 in Five Horizons, two acts on both bill lines, thirty entries in each chronology, two guests named in both notes, the objects under the date, and four house files.
