Long Road Opens the First Encore in San Diego

· Sports Arena · San Diego

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's first encore opens with "Long Road" and runs through "Habit" to "Porch," and its second holds "Indifference." The house's information file says a stretch between "Immortality" and "Alive" was patched from another source.

On Monday, November 6, 1995, Pearl Jam played in San Diego, at an arena that the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as the San Diego Sports Arena and Five Horizons as the Sports Arena. The chronology gives an attendance of 12 500 and marks the show sold out, and Five Horizons gives 12,000 with no status. The chronology's opening act line names Ramones, and Five Horizons' support act line names The Ramones. The chronology prints twenty-one entries in its setlist, seven in a first encore and one in a second, twenty-nine in all, while Five Horizons gives twenty on its set line and seven and one on its two encore lines, twenty-eight in all. The chronology's note opens by saying that Monkeywrench Radio carried the band's set on air.

The show

One Arena, Two Names

Five Horizons heads the night at the Sports Arena in San Diego, CA, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology at the San Diego Sports Arena in the same city, adding USA to the place. The house's information file gives Five Horizons' form, Sports Arena, with San Diego, CA, on its third line. Five Horizons brackets 148m after its heading without stating what it measures, and the chronology's heading carries no figure. Neither chronology's entry gives a capacity, a door or stage time, a ticket price, or a promoter.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs "Release," "Animal," "Last Exit," "Even Flow," "Dissident," "Not For You," "Rearviewmirror," "Elderly Woman," which it follows with three dots, "Go," "Tremor Christ," "Why Go," "Jeremy," "Deep," "Daughter," "Corduroy," "Lukin," "Whipping," "Immortality," "Alive," "Black," and "Blood." Its first encore holds "Long Road," "So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star," "Habit," "Better Man," "Leaving Here," "Spin The Black Circle," and "Porch," and its second holds "Indifference." Five Horizons' set line gives twenty entries in the chronology's order, its first encore line seven, and its second one. Both notes report that the money from a difference in the ticket cost went to the Surfrider Foundation as a donation, $50 000 by the chronology's figure and $50,000 by Five Horizons'.

The Next Step

San Jose, two days earlier, is told in Kim Warnick and Ben Harper in San Jose. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, November 7, at the same arena in San Diego; it is told in A First I Can't Explain in San Diego.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line that names the band, the date, San Diego, and v2 in parentheses, and carries the label info-file. Five Horizons' entry ends with three short lines that read as link labels of its page: setlist scan, Monkeywrench, and Radio link. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs an image whose markup title reads Setlist and six more images. It also hangs four more objects: a link to a PDF file, an image, and two links into the chronology's remaster series, one to a zip file and one to a text file. The house holds two files for the night, in one folder: the remaster series' information file and its fingerprint list. The information file opens with three lines naming the band, the date, and the arena with its city and state. Its source line starts with Monkeywrench FM and runs to DAT at its end. Its lineage line runs from DAT to FLAC at its end. Its notes say that a stretch running from the end of "Immortality" to the start of "Alive" was patched from another source, that the left and right channels were given different equalization, the bass and treble on the left and the midrange on the right, and that V2 has less of the low end than V1. Its thirty-two numbered labels open with Intro and follow the chronology's setlist in its order from "Release" to "Blood," and two groups come after them, each opening with an Encore Break label, the first running from "Long Road" to "Porch" and the second giving "Indifference." The fingerprint list gives each of thirty-two FLAC file names a value, the names repeating the labels save for one lower-case letter in the twenty-fifth. The information file and the fingerprint list name no recordist and give no length for the recording. San Diego on November 6 comes down to one arena under two names, 148m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 12 500 in the chronology and 12,000 in Five Horizons, one act on both bill lines, twenty-nine entries against twenty-eight, a broadcast in the chronology's note, the objects under the date, and two house files.
