A First I Can't Explain in San Diego
The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note says the night brought Pearl Jam's first live performance of "I Can't Explain." Both notes say "Lukin" opened with an ambient guitar introduction before a snappy "Whipping," and the chronology's note says Eddie played part of "This Boy" by himself.

On Tuesday, November 7, 1995, Pearl Jam played a second night in San Diego, at the arena that the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology again heads as the San Diego Sports Arena and Five Horizons again as the Sports Arena. As on November 6, the chronology gives an attendance of 12 500 and marks the show sold out, and Five Horizons gives 12,000 with no status. The chronology's opening act line names Ramones again, and Five Horizons' support act line names The Ramones. The chronology prints twenty-three entries in its setlist, four in a first encore and one in a second, twenty-eight in all, while Five Horizons gives twenty-two on its set line and four and one on its two encore lines, twenty-seven in all. Both notes open with praise: in their view a second show in one place never disappoints, this one included, and Mike had a wild night.
The show
The Same Arena, the Next Night
The two headings name the arena as they did the night before, Five Horizons' as the Sports Arena in San Diego, CA, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's as the San Diego Sports Arena in the same city, with USA added to the place. The house's information file gives Five Horizons' form, Sports Arena, with San Diego, CA, on its third line. Five Horizons brackets 131m after its heading without stating what it measures, and the chronology's heading carries no figure. Neither chronology's entry gives a capacity, a door or stage time, a ticket price, or a promoter.
The Performance
The chronology's setlist runs "Oceans," "Go," "Animal," "Last Exit," "Tremor Christ," "Corduroy," "Rearviewmirror," "Better Man," "Even Flow," "Why Go," "Deep," "Red Mosquito," "Glorified G," "Daughter," "Jeremy," "Not For You," "I Got Id," "Lukin," "Whipping," "This Boy," "Alive," "Black," and "Blood." Its first encore holds "Spin The Black Circle," "Leaving Here," "I Can't Explain," and "Porch," and its second holds "Yellow Ledbetter." Five Horizons' set line gives twenty-two entries in the chronology's order, its first encore line the same four, and its second one. Both notes say that as "Why Go" ended Eddie raised the guitar above his head as though to smash it, that a tech, their word, took it out of his hands, and that he looked terribly surprised. The chronology's note says "Deep" came after "Why Go," and that the band did not play the two songs live again before the 2003 tour. Both notes say Eddie made his feeling about "Glorified G" plain, twice putting other words in place of its lyrics, with half a smile and a look back at Stone. The chronology's note says that, with tuning problems as "I Got Id" ended, Eddie threw his guitar aside. Both notes say "Lukin" opened with an ambient guitar introduction and led into what they call a snappy "Whipping." The chronology's note says Eddie played part of "This Boy" by himself. Both notes say Eddie came back for the first encore on a skateboard, and that Stone started a small fire at the foot of the singer's microphone stand. Both notes say that the two shows in San Diego raised $50 000, by the chronology's figure, or $50,000, by Five Horizons', a sum given to the Surfrider Foundation. Mentioning it, they say, brought a remark that the band had made a mess of the next song the night before, and Eddie then fumbled the opening of "Leaving Here" before the band got into it. The chronology's note says this was Pearl Jam's first live performance of "I Can't Explain," which it calls a song of The Who. Both notes call the night a fine end to a 1995 tour that they call wild. The chronology's note ends by saying that Monkeywrench Radio carried the band's set on air.
The Next Step
San Diego, the night before, at the same arena, is told in Long Road Opens the First Encore in San Diego.
Recording & sound
What the Record Preserves
The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line that names the band, the date, and San Diego and carries the label info-file. After its note, Five Horizons' entry gives three short lines that read as link labels of its page: setlist scan, Monkeywrench, and Radio link. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs two images whose markup titles read Setlist, one whose markup title reads Encores, one more image, and two links into its remaster series, one to a zip file and one to a text file. The house holds two files for the night, in one folder: the remaster series' information file and its fingerprint list. The information file opens with three lines naming the band, the date, and the arena with its city and state. Its source line names a broadcast and ends with a parenthesis that gives two sample rates, 48kHz for the main set and 32kHz for the encores, and FLAC is both the first and the last word of its lineage line. Its notes say that the two channels were given separate equalization to make a stereo separation, the bass and treble on the left and the midrange on the right, and that occasional static runs through the main set in the original source. Its thirty-one numbered labels open with Intro and follow the chronology's setlist in its order from "Oceans" to "Blood," and two groups come after them, each opening with an Encore Break label, the first running from "Spin the Black Circle" to "Porch" and the second giving "Yellow Ledbetter." The fingerprint list gives each of thirty-one FLAC file names a value, the names repeating the labels. The information file and the fingerprint list name no recordist and give no length for the recording. San Diego on November 7 comes down to one arena under the two names of the night before, 131m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 12 500 in the chronology and 12,000 in Five Horizons, one act on both bill lines, twenty-eight entries against twenty-seven, a first "I Can't Explain" in the chronology's note, the objects under the date, and two house files.
