A Warm-Up Show at the Showbox

· Showbox · Seattle

Five Horizons' note calls the night a warm-up show and says "Mankind" was rather rough and "Off He Goes" somewhat rushed. The same note says Mike cut loose in "Even Flow" and calls "Wash," not played since 1994, a surprise.

On Saturday, September 14, 1996, Pearl Jam played in Seattle at the Showbox, the venue both chronologies name in their headings. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology gives an attendance of 800 and marks the show sold out, and Five Horizons gives 800 with no status. The chronology's opening act line and Five Horizons' support act line each name Gus. The chronology's setlist runs to eighteen entries and its encore to five, twenty-three in all, and Five Horizons' set and encore lines give the same counts.

The show

The Showbox in Seattle

Both headings place the show at the Showbox in Seattle, WA, the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's with USA after the state. Five Horizons brackets 105m after its heading without stating what it measures. Five Horizons' note says that news of the ticket sale had leaked early and that many fans ended up outside, disappointed, in the rain and the cold. Those who waited outside in the hope of catching a song or two put up, in the note's account, with harassment from the Showbox's staff, whom it calls mean-spirited, and with scalpers selling tickets at inflated prices.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs "Sometimes," "Hail Hail," "Who You Are," "In My Tree," "Habit," "Present Tense," "Red Mosquito," "Mankind," "Off He Goes," "Animal," "Last Exit," "Even Flow," "Tremor Christ," "Not For You," "Immortality," "Whipping," "I Got Id," and "Leaving Here," and its encore holds "Wash," "Go," "Dissident," "Alive," and "Around The Bend." Five Horizons' set line gives eighteen entries in the chronology's order, and its encore line the same five. Five Horizons' note calls the night a warm-up show. The note calls "Mankind" rather rough and "Off He Goes" somewhat rushed. The same note says Mike cut loose in "Even Flow," and it calls "Wash," not played since 1994, a surprise.

The Next Step

San Diego, 312 days earlier, is told in A First I Can't Explain in San Diego. Both chronologies put the next show two days later, September 16, in Seattle; it is told in A Technical Nightmare in Seattle.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line that names the band, the date, and Seattle and carries the label info-file. Five Horizons' entry closes with a one-word line, photos, that reads as a link label of its page. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs eight objects: an image whose markup title reads Setlist, five more images, and two links into its remaster series, one to a zip file and one to a text file. The house holds two files for the night: the remaster series' information file and its fingerprint list. The information file opens with three lines that name the band, the date, and the Showbox with its city and state. Its source entry includes a line marked right. Its lineage line gives two chains, the first starting from CDR and the second from CD, and FLAC is the last word of each. Its notes, the file's own statement about its sources, say that the source marked right is distorted in places, above all on the left, so the mix takes the right side from that source and the left side from the other. Its twenty-five numbered labels open with Intro and follow the chronology's setlist, in order, from "Sometimes" to "Leaving Here," and after an Encore Break label a second group runs from "Wash" to "Around the Bend." The fingerprint list gives each of twenty-five FLAC file names a value, the names repeating the labels, except that the third drops the comma from "Hail, Hail." The information file and the fingerprint list name no recordist and give no length for the recording. Seattle on September 14 comes down to the Showbox under one name in both headings, 105m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 800 in each chronology, one act on both bill lines, twenty-three entries in each, a warm-up show in Five Horizons' note, eight objects under the date, and two house files.
